The View-Master’s New Lease On Life As A VR Device

The beloved and retro View-Master seemed quite ripe for an update. After all, the toy was for many the first exposure to any kind of “augmented experience.”

On Monday, the Internet had been a-buzz with the announcement that Google and Mattel had partnered up to give new life to View-Master, and we were left to wonder until today what that update would be like.

Unveiled today at the World Toy Fair in New York City, the View-Master is now a VR device that uses Google’s Cardboard VR tech via a Mattel app. If you were worried about the disappearance of the View-Master’s iconic image wheel, never fear. The wheels are sold separately and will still provide that 3D effect that so wowed us as kids.“We are focused on the here and now,” said Mattel’s Doug Wadleigh <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/13/google-and-mattel-revive-the-85-year-old-view-master-with-cardboard-vr/" target="_blank">according to TechCrunch</a>. “This is a wonderful partnership, because their capabilities and our capabilities and where we want to go with this technology are perfectly in tune.”The reimagined View-Master will retail for $29.99 with the reels in packs of four for $14.99.
