Microsoft wants players to get the most out of its Xbox One console, and today it introduced a fresh new update that should make a difference when it comes to improving its overall performance.

The new software pack, dubbed DirectX 12, will enable the Xbox One to double the graphics performance it’s currently been capable of offering – which should make all the difference when it comes to games. One notable feature is the ability to play games in full 1080p, rather than the default 720p.

“The results are spectacular. Not just in theory but in practice (full disclosure: I am involved with the Star Swarm demo which makes use of this kind of technology),” said Stardock founder and CEO Brad Wardell about the technology. “While each generation of video card struggles to gain substantial performance over the previous generation, here, the same hardware will suddenly see a doubling of performance.

“Xbox One is the biggest beneficiary; it effectively gives every Xbox One owner a new GPU that is twice as fast as the old one,” he added.

The update should be available now, and is free of charge.
