Ad Spending Up Q1 2011

Kantar Media reports that U.S. ad spending was $32.5 billion in the first quarter of 2011, a 4.4 percent gain over the first quarter a year earlier. This was the fifth-consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, thought it was the smallest rate of growth in those five quarters.

“With the advertising recovery in its second year, 2011 gets bench-marked against the elevated spending levels of last year and that makes for tougher comparisons,” said Jon Swallen, senior VP for research at Kantar Media Intelligence.

Spending among the 100 biggest advertisers (which accounts for nearly half of all ad spending) grew nearly 5 percent. Among the top ten, automotive and insurance grew by 23 percent and 29 percent; the only declines came in telecoms (2.1 percent) and financial services (2.6 percent).

“Despite slowing growth, there are positive signs,” he said. “The market expanded by $1.4 billion during the first quarter, which nearly equals the amount of gain at the start of 2010 when the recovery began. In addition, a rising proportion of advertisers are increasing their ad budgets and this indicates spending growth is still rippling outward through the market.”

Facebook IPO Could Be $100 Billion In October

Mavs Win Championship, NBA Wins Ratings

Game 6 of the Dallas/Miami NBA Finals received a 15.0 TV rating, or the third-highest NBA overnight since ABC/ESPN began their run with NBA games in 2002. This is an impressive mark, behind only the 2011 Lakers/Celtics Finals Game 7 (18.2 rating) and Game 5 of the 2004 Lakers/Pistons Finals (15.5 rating) among all NBA games on the two networks.

With solid ratings throughout the playoffs, the NBA is well set up for next year since fans clearly will tune in to watch the Heat, win or lose. Also helping is the fact that New York, Los Angeles and Chicago all have competitive playoff teams consecutively for the first time in years.
