EA Coy On Five New Social Titles, Due To Mimicry

Electronic Arts has announced that they are planning to launch five new social games based upon EA brands in the next fiscal year. EA CEO John Riccitiello said that he would not reveal many details about the titles before they launch.

“We have to deal with the reality that, I won’t call it copying, but mimicry is common in this industry, and fast iteration and mimicry is something we have to guard against, so we don’t put out a lot of information on the individual titles,” explained Riccitiello.

Facebook Launches IPO

Facebook confirmed rumors by filing for an IPO on February 1, 2012. Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the opportunity to send a letter to prospective investors.

“Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission – to make the world more open and connected,” said Zuckerberg. “We think it’s important that everyone who invests in Facebook understands what this mission means to us, how we make decisions and why we do the things we do.”

“We believe that a more open world is a better world because people with more information can make better decisions and have a greater impact,” he continued. “That goes for running our company as well. We work hard to make sure everyone at Facebook has access to as much information as possible about every part of the company so they can make the best decisions and have the greatest impact.”

“Once again, Facebook exists to make the world more open and connected, and not just to build a company. We expect everyone at Facebook to focus every day on how to build real value for the world in everything they do. Thanks for taking the time to read this letter. We believe that we have an opportunity to have an important impact on the world and build a lasting company in the process. I look forward to building something great together,” Zuckerberg concluded.

Kinect For Windows Rolls Out

Microsoft has announced the official launch of the Kinect for Windows program. Already, over 300-plus organizations have worked with it via early adoption including United Health Group, American Express, Mattel, Telefonica and Toyota.

“It’s been just over a year since we launched Kinect for Xbox 360, and we’re only starting to scratch the surface of what’s possible with Kinect,” said Kinect for Windows general manager Craig Eisler. “By offering hardware and software that’s designed specifically for Windows applications, we hope to inspire visionaries around the world to create trans-formative breakthroughs with Kinect – taking its gesture and voice capabilities beyond the living room into other industries such as education, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail.”

Also, Microsoft and Tech Stars are running a Kinect Accelerator program for entrepreneurs, engineers and innovators to develop applications with Kinect as part of a three-month competition. Find out more about it here {link no longer active}.

Tera Opens For Pre-Order

En Masse Entertainment has announced that Tera is available for pre-order for $49.99. Everyone who pre-orders will have access to the MMORPG’s Closed Beta Tests, running from February through April, in addition to the Head Start play period over the weekend prior to the game’s launch on May 1.

“By breaking away from yesterday’s repetitive combat systems, and delivering real action, Tera is going to keep players on their toes and actively engaged in the game,” said Chris Lee, Vice President of Publishing at En Masse Entertainment. “The days of staring at your skill bar while pounding the Tab key are over. By requiring players to actively aim, dodge, and block, Tera’s action combat introduces real skill to MMO gameplay.”

There will also be a boxed collector’s edition and a digital download. The physical version will include a Letter of Marque, a canvas world map, a field guide, a Valkyon Federation-issued compass, and a game soundtrack for $79.99, while it and the digital version (which will retail for $59.99) will have the Frostlion Mount for in-game mount, the level 15 Velik’s Bloodstone Necklace and the level 40 Shakan’s Bloodstone Necklace.

Google Responses To Congress Deemed Inadequate

Google responded quickly to a letter sent by members of Congress, responding with a 13 page response outlining the company’s new privacy policy. Lawmakers aren’t pleased at the idea that, while Google claims this will give users more control over how their data is collected and used, but it will not let them opt out.

“Some have expressed concern about whether consumers can opt out of our updated privacy policy,” wrote Pablo Chavez, Google’s director of public policy. “We understand the question at the heart of this concern. We believe that the relevant issue is whether users have choices about how their data is collected and used.”

Lawmakers consider it inadequate the the only way to opt out is to not use Google services. “Sharing users’ personal information across its products may make good business sense for Google, but it undermines privacy safeguards for consumers,” said Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and co-chairman of the Congressional Privacy Caucus. “Despite Google’s recent response, it still appears that consumers will not be able to completely opt out of data collection and information sharing among Google’s services.”

“Google is putting financial opportunity over customers’ personal privacy and that’s a fact,” said Sen. Joe Barton (R-Texas), co-chair of the Congressional Privacy Caucus, who along with Markey, has asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate. “The company has generic stock language for answers. Very few details are given and the same language appears repeatedly. Google keeps referring to its efforts [as] transparent, but there is nothing transparent in its response. Instead of being so focused on correcting what it believed to be inaccurate media reports, Google should have focused on answering the questions that we asked.”

“While Google clarifies in the letter a number of ways consumers can control their privacy settings, oftentimes consumers remain automatically logged in to Gmail services. … I still have lingering questions remaining,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. “I believe the next step is to have Google come in to brief us on these responses so that we can assure true privacy protections are in place before the new policy goes into effect March 1.”

Sounds like the next step might be a new set of hearings.
