Many gamers love using dedicated headsets with their video games, whether they’re first-person shooters or some other sort of chat-enabled experience. However, they may have a problem carrying those over to the new systems, particularly the PlayStation 4.
Sony has addressed which PlayStation 3-enabled headsets will and won’t work with the next-gen system.
First up are the company’s own PULSE wireless headsets. Unfortunately, these won’t work at launch, but it is working on an update for the system where they will sometime in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, there’s not a specific date on this.
Next up, headsets that require Bluetooth for chat won’t work on the system whatsoever, so that rules out some of the wireless headsets that are on the market. Ones that require a USB for chat – like the Astro Gaming A50’s and MixAmp-powered units, or the Plantronics RIG, will work with a forthcoming update. Day one compatibility isn’t looking likely though.
Finally, those headsets that use digital optical for game audio will work when it comes to delivering said audio, but they won’t work with chat just yet.
No word yet if Sony is planning a specific PULSE-like headset custom-made for the PlayStation 4, but considering that the Xbox One has its own basic headset, it’d be a good idea.
The PlayStation 4 launches on November 15 in the United States.
