Microsoft is apparently getting serious about increasing market share for Windows phones and tablets – the company is now reducing the license fees for Windows to nothing, at least for Windows phones and small tablets. The news was announced during Microsoft’s Build conference, and it’s going to help Microsoft get more OEMs on board.

The deal is simple: if the devices has a screen size of less than 9″, Windows is available to the OEM for free. Microsoft also announced a future of Windows for the “Internet of Things” (connected devices), which will also be free.

The deal is important because Android has rocketed to popularity among smartphone and tablet makers partly because it doesn’t cost anything for them to use it, where Windows was previously quite expensive. Windows Phone works quite well on low-spec phones, and in fact that’s where it has been selling the best. Microsoft’s new pricing should help the company gain market share in smartphones and small tablets.
