Twitter and Facebook are frowned upon in China, but there’s one area that will enable them to work. The Shanghai Free Trade Zone will soon have access to those social networks as well as media outlets, according to a report from the South China Morning Post. Foreign telecommunications companies are also being shopped around for the zone.

“In order to welcome foreign companies to invest and to let foreigners live and work happily in the free-trade zone, we must think about how we can make them feel like at home,” said a source speaking with the Post. “If they can’t get onto Facebook or read The New York Times, they may naturally wonder how special the free-trade zone is compared with the rest of China.”

The Trade Zone is a place where foreign investment and a yuan-powered financial sector work more freely than the rest of the country. Not everyone is pleased with its existence, however, as some see it as a potential threat to parts of Hong Kong.
