Gearbox Software has done its share of licensed titles, including the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines, and has done plenty of realistic war shooters in the Brothers in Arms series. It’s perhaps unsurprising then to find out that Activision tried to get the studio to make a Call of Duty title, though Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford indicates that they passed for a couple of reasons.

“I didn’t know what there was to aim for there,” said Pitchford. “I think to deliver the Call of Duty that people want you have to play by the rules of the series. You have to do what is expected of a Call of Duty. So I see no real challenge for us. It wouldn’t strengthen our reputation as a studio, and it wouldn’t be really motivating for our team.”
