San Francisco has become the first U.S. city to approve a law that requires cell phone vendors to disclose how much radiation their units emit. The measure passed on a vote of 10-1 from the Board of Supervisors.

If Mayor Gavin Newsom makes this a law, retailers would have to display “Specific Absorption Rate” next to the phones or risk a fine between $100 to $300. Two amendments were proposed to lessen the law’s restrictions.

“First, I would like the amendments — to include and express provision that is our intent only to enforce the law through the administrative process outline, ensuring that retailers are not liable for criminal penalties,” said Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier. “Secondly, codifies [sic] into the environmental code to make sure that the city is not assuming liability. The amendments are technical and minor, they address the legitimate concerns of some small businesses.
