Sony Corporation today announced that some of its Vaio laptops may suffer from overheating problems. The company is providing a downloadable firmware update that they say will prevent the issues in question.

“Recently, we became aware of a potential issue affecting certain units within the Vaio notebook PCs’ F11 and CW2 series,” said Sony. “In rare instances, these notebook computers may overheat due to a potential malfunction of the internal temperature management system, resulting in deformation of the product’s keyboard or external casing, and a potential burn hazard to consumers.”

Over half a million Vaio laptops are believed to be vulnerable to the malfunction.
