As expected, Apple today unveiled the latest version of the iPhone at WWDC. The iPhone 4 comes equipped with an extra camera (front-facing for video conferences) and a gyroscope (expected to be used by developers in a variety of ways).

“It is the thinnest smartphone on the planet,” said CEO Steve Jobs, saying it was 9.3 millimeters thick. He also described the stronger battery and the steel frame of the phone, which is used as an antenna.

The iPhone 4 will also be faster than previous iPhones, coming equipped with the A4 chip also featured in the iPad. The iPhone is also described as being more angular that the previous designs of the iPhone.

This new iPhone 4 will be available June 24 in black and white cases.  Apple plans to make the device available for $199 for the 16-gigabyte version and $299 for the 32-gigabyte version.

The latest version of the iPhone OS (called iOS 4) will feature multitasking, location applications, a gaming platform called Games Center, an iBooks readers and a new e-mail inbox. Despite anticipation that a Verizon compatible iPhone would be unveiled, no such announcement was made, leaving AT&T the exclusive carrier of Apple products for the moment.
