British actor Henry Cavill has been named to the title roll of the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel movie. Probably best known as the Duke of Suffolk in the TV series The Tudors, he’s also seen leading roles in Whatever Works, Stardust, Tristan + Isolde and The Count of Monte Cristo and the upcoming Immortals.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” said director Zack Snyder. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

The film will be produced by Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and has been scripted by David Goyer. Filming will begin over the Summer with a planned December 2012 release.
