Amazon, having been successful with the tablet models it’s released over the past few years in its Kindle line-up, is moving on to a new department – smartphones.

The company is hard at work on two new models of smartphones, one that utilizes a 3D eye-tracking device, and another that’s more standard but designed to be inexpensive. Both were under a “Project B” label before the news managed to leak out earlier in the year, with the code name of the 3D smartphone now set as “Project Smith.”

The 3D model will feature four built-in cameras, each one on the corner of the device to track eye and head motions. This will be used to create a 3D effect on the screen without using any special screen technology, changing the views of objects based on the position of your eyes relative to the screen. The smartphone will also utilize an image recognition feature for 3D objects, so you can then find it on Amazon for possible purchase.

The inexpensive model may feature technology similar to the Kindle Fire tablets, running off the FireOS version of Android. The benefit will likely be a high-powered smartphone at a very low price, with easy access to Amazon content and (of course) shopping.

There’s no word yet when the phones will release, though this year isn’t very likely.
