In a shift for the retailer, Best Buy is putting more emphasis on smartphones, electronic readers and tablet computers than ever before, supplanting large televisions and desktop computers a bit. Primary among their offerings will be Apple’s iPad, Amazon.com’s Kindle, along with floorspace devoted to Move and Kinect.

“People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives,” Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn said in an interview. “We are really positioning the company to be the place where people can come and see the best of the connected world.”

Dunn noted that all of Best Buy’s 1,093 U.S. stores will have the iPad by September 26. He also noted that internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptops by as much as 50 percent.
