Facebook is right now testing a new real-time feature on user’s home feeds. This will display more of an at-a-glance a list of what their friends are sharing, who they are adding as friends and displaying check-in notifications.

Called the Happening Now sidebar, it right now sits on the right side of a user s feed and provides real-time updates. The advantages is that it gives users a chance to see how their connections are interacting with one another without navigating away from their main feed.

Right now there’s potential for overlap with the news feed, so it might need to be filtered for real time info along with things that might not warrant inclusion in the newsfeed. Another good inclusion may be specific events and the used of Facebook Places check-ins to let people know about their locations and interactions outside of Facebook.

“We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and liking , as these actions are being taken on Facebook, “said Facebook. “This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users,  just a fraction of a percent. In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.”
