Sony also announced that they will update the PlayStation Store in Spring 2011 to support PlayStation-certified devices and PlayStation Suite content.

In addition, SCE can approach to a wider range of content developers, non-gaming developers and individual programmers.”

MapleStory — All The Fun Of Marriage And Divorce

Nexon has revealed that MapleStory has seen 26,982 marriages, which cost $25 in real money to perform. Of those 20,344, or 75 percent, have since been annulled at the players’ request, costing 500,000 mesos in in-game currency.

“My former Maple spouse and I started off great; going on party quests together, boss runs, training, helping each other become better Maplers,” said Seth, 19, from Colorado Springs, Colorado. “Then I realized after a while that she was only out there to get free things off of me and we got in this conversation where she admitted to this accusation, so I decided I would have to annul our Maple marriage.”

“Getting married in MapleStory can be quite a fun event for the happy couple and their friends. While it looks like our players break up at a much higher rate than people do in real life, at least our players are not on the hook for alimony,” said MapleStory producer Crystin Cox, adding, “Couples who break up are not required to split up their loot, virtual pets or any enchanted items.”

MMO Subscriptions Down In 2010, Shift Towards Microtransactions In Progress

According to Screen Digest, subscriber revenues for PC MMOs and multiplayer online games in the U.S. and Europe went down during 2010, marking a shift towards microtransactions and away from subscriptions. Subscription revenue totaled $1.58 billion in 2010, down five percent from $1.66 billion in 2009; that year was ten percent stronger than the year previous and 2008 had seen 21.6 percent growth.

“The 2010 decline in subscription revenue – the first annual contraction experienced by the market since our coverage of this segment started in 2002 – represents an inflection point for the industry,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, senior analyst and head of games at Screen Digest.

Microtransactions, totaled $1.13 billion in 2010 or 24.2 percent up from $909 million in 2009. Overall, the MMOG/MOG market accounted for a 9.6 percent share of U.S. and European spending on all games content in 2010.

“This more than compensated for the decline in the subscription area and caused total Western MMOG/MOG market revenue – both subscriptions and microtransactions – to rise to $2.7 billion in 2010, up 5.3 percent from $2.57 billion in 2009,” said Harding-Rolls. “Microtransaction revenue will continue to rise during the following years, expanding to $1.8 billion in 2015. This will drive up combined MMOG/MOG revenue in North America and Europe to $3.13 billion in 2015.”

Ad Spending Increased For Q2 2011

A report by Kantar Media said that ad spending in major media in the U.S. in the second quarter rose 2.8 percent from the same period a year ago. While it is the sixth straight quarterly gain since Q4 2009, it was the smallest of those increases.

While total growth for the first half of 2011 is up 3.2 percent, the lack of growth is worrisome to media owners who want to pull out of the recession. A majority of media types, it must be said, did see increases during first half of 2011.

However, the 100 biggest advertisers “stalled” in the second quarter. “The ad market became more dependent on the comparatively smaller budgets of midsized advertisers as the main source of growth,” said Jon Swallen, senior vice president for research at the Kantar Media North America unit of Kantar Media.

Of the seven categories of media tracked in the first half, only two were down from the first half of 2010 and they were both printed media. They were newspapers, down 0.3 percent, and free-standing inserts, mostly distributed through newspapers, down 6.4 percent.

The categories that were up compared to the first six months of 2010 were outdoor at 11.8 percent, followed by Internet media, up 10.4 percent, magazines at 2.9 percent, television up 1.8 percent, and radio up 1.4 percent.

Valve Not Very Interested In Portable Offerings

Prominent game studios id Software and Epic Games have famously made forays into the portable space with games like Rage and Infinity Blade. Valve Software, however, has made no such announcement and currently has no such plans.

“We’re about people sitting on their couches or at their desks,” Valve writer Chet Faliszek. “We haven’t forayed into that space. It’s just not a space our engine has been looked at or optimized for.”
