Double Fine Takes Over $3 Million In Kickstarter

Double Fine has concluded its Kickstarter Campaign, and managed to drum up $3,335,265 from 87,138 backers. The developers celebrated publicly on Ustream and noted that this was the most successful campaign in Kickstarter history, adding that an additional $110,000 was raised from premium backers not listed on Kickstarter.

“This is not the end of the whole gaming industry as we know it. There still might be a few games made by publishers after today,” said a cheeky Tim Schafer. “If you’ve ever been told you were part of a niche gaming effort, you can now be part of a super niche. Why does a big company get to choose what I watch or play Well, now they can’t. Thank you to everybody on the team, to the backers, and to Cindy at Kickstarter.”

Halo 4 Will Start Story Arcs For Halo 5 and Halo 6

Halo 4 is the beginning of a new trilogy for Microsoft’s biggest franchise, with ideas for Halo 5 and Halo 6 already in the works. Still, 343 Industries says they’ll have to go through the creative process before definitively nailing things down.

“We have a definite story arc in mind,” said 343 studio creative director Josh Holmes. “We have a very, very clear vision and understanding of the story for Halo 4 obviously and as you go further out from that point into the saga it obviously becomes a little looser.”

“Everything that we’ve created has been designed with constancy and tie-ins to the existing cannon,” he added . “So all of the historical cannon that comes before this game has been taken into account and connects in meaningful ways. And there’s been a lot of work that we’ve put in to building the franchise. Specifically, Frank O’Connor and the franchise team have been developing the fiction that surrounds the franchise and they’ve put a lot of effort into creating those tie-ins to the things that we’re building for Halo 4. That’s something that we’ve partnered together on for the last several years.”

Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Starting

inXile Entertainment’s CEO Brian Fargo has announced that he has started the Kickstarter funding Wasteland 2 and is looking to land roughly $1 million. The game has many veterans who worked on the first Wasteland along with the first two Fallout games, and Fargo was keen to emphasize that this would be the last chance the franchise and indeed this genre of RPGs might get.

“We’re going back to the original and building from there,” detailed Fargo. “No first person shooter, we’re going top down so you get a tactical feel for the situation. And we’re not ditching the party play to turn it into some hack-and-slash bloodfest. It’s turn based, tactical, with a storyline that will be deeper and broader. We’re determined to keep the gritty, grim and satirical writing. We’re going to pitch those moral dilemmas at you. You’re going to be faced with the consequences of your actions.”

“We’re planning on an initial 6 months of pre-production,” he added. “We’ll nail down every important element that you, our creative partners, want.  Once we have all that figured out, we buckle down for 12 month development cycle. During that time, players can get a sneak peek on a private closed beta through Steam.  In addition, we will be giving you constant updates and showing you our progress along the way.”

Apple Hit With Lawsuit Over Siri Functions

A class-action lawsuit states that iPhone 4S Siri ads are deceptive and misleading. The suit says that the Apple product’s advertising campaign misrepresents Siri’s capabilities.

“[Apple’s] advertisements regarding the Siri feature are fundamentally and designedly false and misleading,” the complaint reads. “The iPhone 4S’s Siri feature does not perform as advertised, rendering the iPhone 4S merely a more expensive iPhone 4.”

Complaints include saying that the way that Siri is shown answering questions about finding locations and subjects online is fictional. Other problems include wait times for responses and Siri’s data demands.

Apple’s advertising does feature a disclaimer that the searching sequences were shortened. The company’s website features a a longer disclaimer saying, “Siri is available in Beta only on iPhone 4S and requires internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area.”

The iPhone 4S pushed Apple to record sales late in 2011, comprising 33 million of the 37 million iPhones sold.

Zynga Reportedly Pushing Secondary Stock Offering

Reports are that Zynga is looking to allow some current stockholders to sell shares to other investors. This secondary offering is designed to help avoid a drop in the stock price after the end of the lockup period.

“Zynga probably does not need to raise any additional capital,” said Carter Mack, president of investment bank JMP Group Inc. “This is a way to offer their existing shareholders a chance to get liquidity on the stock.”

“It’s the right thing to do to allow some of the insiders to have a liquidity event, hopefully without disrupting the market,” said Arvind Bhatia, an analyst at Sterne, Agee & Leach Inc.

Twisted Metal Designer ‘Couldn’t Care Less’ About New Consoles

The Wii U is the first console release of the newest generation and talk is already starting to heat up on the next Xbox and PlayStation. However, Twisted Metal and God of War creator David Jaffe isn’t terribly excited about the increase in power that the next set of consoles will grant.

“I couldn’t care less about next-gen,” said Jaffe. “I started at Sony Imagesoft doing Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games, and I went through that to PS1, then PS2, PS3, Vita . . . You go through the cycle enough and you realize today’s ‘Oh my f***ing God’ is tomorrow’s ‘Ehh, whatever’.”

“Ultimately, this is all going to be yesterday’s news and it’s about the experience, the game. Unless we’re talking about holodecks, or AI that’s so amazing it can actually write a compelling story around you procedurally based on your choices, I’m not interested,” he added.

Jaffe issued a clarification after the above statement came out, he said, “When I went on to say I was looking at doing a next-gen game, I was NOT contradicting myself. Just because I’m not excited about the new tech (from what little I know of it . . . hell, if it is really innovative and lets our games be better and not just look better, I WILL be excited for it) . . . but assuming that’s not the case: just because I’m not excited for next-gen tech, doesn’t mean I’m not very excited to make a next- gen game with our new studio. Big budget, character/story, new IP games often times NEED to be on the latest consoles and while the next-gen tech of consoles so far has me very ‘whatever’, the desire to work with an amazing team to help create a big budget, character/story, new IP has me very jazzed!”
