Vanquish: No Surrender

A lot of games have tackled the idea of a war between the U.S. and Russia. However, Vanquish does one better by putting the story through the crazy anime filter that Shinji Mikami sees the world through.

Gmail Priority Trailer

Gotta love Google and their old school and approachable trailers for their services. Check out this one, which has a trumpet score that sounds like the backdrop to something from the 1920s.

Rare Wanted A ‘Button’ For Kinect

Some people who look on the Kinect think it would be a better gaming device with some sort of handheld controller. That, as it turns out, is exactly what Rare creative director George Andreas thought when he first saw it

“We went over to see Kinect, called Project Natal back then. Really early hardware, held together with sticky tape,” recalled Andreas. “We were amazed by the potential, but what we had seen didn’t realize that potential, and it wasn’t until the flight home when were chatting that it sank in.”

“We were absolutely adamant that we needed a button, something with haptic feedback, that would initiate an action. It took a long time – we threw some prototypes together and then we saw you didn’t need one, he added. “We were very vocal to Kudo [Tsunoda, Kinect lead] at the time, and Peter Molyneux was as well, that you needed something in your hand.”

However, he eventually warmed to the design: “You end up falling back on the [gamepad] control scheme. It’s a crutch really.

Oracle Bites Back Over HP Suit

It didn’t take long after HP filed suit against its former CEO Mike Hurd to prevent him from joining Oracle for things to turn nasty. A recently released comment could potentially signal a rift between the two big tech companies.

“Oracle has long viewed HP as an important partner. By filing this vindictive lawsuit against Oracle and Mark Hurd, the HP board is acting with utter disregard for that partnership, our joint customers, and their own shareholders and employees,” wrote Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. “The HP Board is making it virtually impossible for Oracle and HP to continue to cooperate and work together in the IT marketplace.”

Duke Nukem Acquired By Gearbox

Gearbox Software announced that it has acquired all the rights to the Duke Nukem IP from 3D Realms. This apparently amicable sale gives Gearbox the sole rights to the franchise from this day forward.

“Fifteen years ago, Duke Nukem 3D helped launch my professional video game development career. The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “The Fans of the legendary hero and all the incredible talent that have ever helped him all deserve the very best support that we can bring. Gearbox and Duke Nukem make for a devastating match made in video game heaven,” added Scott Miller, co-founder of 3D Realms. “The gaming community’s love and demand for the Duke Nukem brand never wavered and Gearbox will not disappoint them. Their vision for its future direction is exciting and unbelievable. I am personally cannot wait for fans to see their unique take on the franchise,” said 3D Realms founder George Broussard. “This will be a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially the fans.”

Unbreakable Sequel Became Devil

M. Night Shyamalan apparently gets asked questions about doing a sequel to his film Unbreakable all the time. While not a sequel, the origins of his latest movie Devil come from Unbreakable.

“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to Unbreakable for one of the ‘Night Chronicles,'” revealed Shyamalan. “It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for Unbreakable, and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.'”

While Shyamalan became sidetracked and focused on things other than an Unbreakable sequel, he stuck with the idea of the villain. “I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie,'” he said. “I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to Unbreakable]. So now I need to come up with a new idea.”

IOS Third Largest Web Platform

According to a recent study, iOS (which includes the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) recently became the third most operating system on the Web with 1.1 percent of all hardware on the Internet during August. This pushed it ahead of Linux, which fell to a 0.85 percent share

“It’s something to take note of when a mobile operating system passes something that’s been around forever,” said Vince Vizzaccaro, Net Applications vice president. “Mobile’s growth curve is strong, and mobile is becoming quite a phenomenon on the Internet.”

“When you combine all the different devices, mobile has a 2.6 percent share,” added Vizzaccaro. “That’s massive when you think about it.”
