IMVU Shifts To Gaming

IMVU announced that it is moving away from virtual worlds to focus on social gaming. Hoping to tap into trends in social networking, they will offer 75 games to their community of more than 50 million registered users.

Viximo, Heyzap and OMGPOP have all partnered with IMVU to offer some of their games.  IMVU has traditionally allowed users to create their own customizable virtual places and avatars and will now allow users to integrate those popular elements into various games.

It’s a broader pivot for us into social entertainment, said Cary Rosenzweig, CEO of IMVU. Online entertainment, especially gaming, has grown up.

Right now, the company is faring well with its virtual goods that it sells for customization, so they see this change as a logical next step. We look forward to the integration of our enormous catalog of virtual items into our games, Rosenzweig said.

Twitter Patches XSS Flaw

Twitter announced that it has corrected a cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw. This vulnerability allowed several XSS worms to spread around to users on Tuesday.

We ve identified and are patching a XSS attack; as always, please message @safety if you have info regarding such an exploit, read an update by Twitter, shortly before the situation was corrected.

The exploit stemmed from Twitter failing to deactivate JavaScript code elements in user input. This allowed for malicious tweets to be created that were activated when a user’s mouse hovered over it, sending the tweets to more users and in many cases linking to porn sites.

Microsoft Exec Says Halo ‘Has Moved Beyond Movies’

Given the recent hit release of Halo: Reach, it seems astounding that Universal and Fox passed up an opportunity to make a movie based on the franchise. Still, considering the franchise has gotten to greater heights without a big movie production, it could be that Halo doesn’t need to reach the big screen.

I don’t know if we need a Halo movie”, said corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios Phil Spencer. “If the right scenario came up, I could see us entertaining it. I don’t think it’s an integral part of where we are going.”

“I think it has moved beyond movies,” Spencer added. “That doesn’t mean we would shut the door on the possibility. I don’t think it’s a requirement.”

Inception Video Game Being Considered

Inception has taken in $753 million, the latest feather in director Christopher Nolan’s cap. Some have said that the movie has video game like elements, and in fact Nolan says plans are being made to do a video game version.

“[What] we are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into a feature film,” said Nolan. “That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”
