NPD: Nearly Half of Digital Game Sales on Mobile Phones

NPD has released its Online Gaming 2011 report, where they noted that mobile phone games represent nearly half of all digital game sales. The share of digital downloads then goes to PCs, then consoles, portables and other systems.

Mobile gaming represents one of the fastest growing segments of the digital games market, and potential for future growth remains strong as more consumers are using smartphones for games of all types, including the increasingly popular mobile game apps,” said NPD’s industry analyst Anita Frazier. “It is important to keep in perspective that the full-game price points on mobile devices are generally lower than those for console and portables systems , so mobile’s full game download unit share does not translate to a comparable level of consumer spend.

Results for how this result for mobile game consumers affected their consumption of other sorts of games were mixed. 60 percent indicated that they are still spending the same or more on console and portable games, though 40 percent are spending less.

While there is clearly some substitution for spending on traditional forms of gaming among 40 per cent of consumers, the majority of mobile consumers indicate that this spending is incremental to their spend on console or portable games, Frazier added. “Which makes sense since the games and devices provide for different types of gaming occasions and experiences.

Nintendo Still Working On Wii Vitality Sensor

Nintendo first showed off the Wii Vitality Sensor at E3 2009, though news about it (or lack thereof) has made many wonder if the peripheral was scrapped by the company. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, however, says that Nintendo wants to make sure they get the technology right before releasing it.

“I imagine that you are worried about that because it hasn’t been put on the market even though a long time has passed since it was initially announced,” said Iwata to investors. “This is a totally new type of entertainment, and there are large individual differences in the biological information of humans. For example, if it was acceptable that only 80 percent of the users thought the result was natural, then we could propose this to consumers right now.

“However, we are aiming for a level of quality in which 99 percent of consumers feel comfortable, and that is why this project is taking time to complete, said Iwata. I feel that this project has a lot of interesting potential, and we would like to continue this project without giving up, but it is difficult to overcome this hurdle, so please understand that now I cannot clearly say when we will be ready to put this on the market.”

Too Human 2 Still Might Be Coming

Too Human was one of the biggest under-performers of 2008, falling well short of expectations both critically and commercially born from its extended development cycle. However, Silicon Knights President Denis Dyack indicates that the series is not dead.

“We intend to finish the trilogy but no comment beyond that, said Dyack. You know, there’s very public litigation around that.”

L.A. Noire Getting Published Short Stories

Rockstar Games and Mulholland Books have announced that they will publish a series of short stories based around the characters and cases from the world of L.A. Noire. Called L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories, it will be available for download on June 6.

L.A. Noire draws on a rich history of not just film, but also great crime literature for inspiration,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “Using the game’s world as a springboard, we worked with the genre’s best writers to create stories that lived up to the finest traditions of crime fiction.”

“We are thrilled to be embarking on a creative partnership with the team at Rockstar Games,” said Michael Pietsch, Publisher of Little, Brown and Company. “The possibilities for cross-promotions of this nature, encouraging gamers to read and readers to play games are huge. We’re looking forward to a new frontier of book publishing possibilities and see Rockstar as an ideal partner.”
