Pixowl Gets $1.2 Million In Funding

Pixowl announced that it has secured $1.2 million in funding. The mobile developer of Doodle Grub and Safari Party will use the money to create more The Grub themed titles.

“The way we plan to develop our company is to create games around The Grub character,” said Pixowl founder Arthur Madrid. “We want to do a mobile game, plush toys, comic books, stickers, and web videos all starring The Grub as the main character.”

Mass Effect Trilogy Release Coming In November

Electronic Arts announced that they are releasing Mass Effect as a compilation trilogy, including all three main games. This retail release will come out November 6, 2012 for Xbox 360 and PC, and later for PS3.

This marks the first time that the original Mass Effect will release for the PS3. While it was not confirmed whether the paid DLC for the games will be included on the discs, the set will be in a “new premium foil box featuring artwork of Commander Shepard.”

IDG World Expo Purchases Games Marketing Summit

IDG World Expo announced that it has acquired the Game Marketing Summit from PromaxBDA. IDG World Expo has assumed all responsibilities for the event previously known as MI6, but PromaxBDA will continue to assist with the Games Marketing Summit’s awards process.

“There is no company more appropriate, capable and supportive of the global gaming industry than IDG World Expo and the entire community is excited to see them take this event to the next level,” said PromaxBDA CEO and president Jonathan Block-Verk.

Dates for the next show have yet to be announced, but the one-day event will take place in San Francisco in Spring 2013.

Three Campaigns Get Creative With Election Buzz

Interest in this year’s election is starting to crescendo as voting day nears, and three brands have found a way to embrace the buzz despite the usual contentious atmosphere. Maker’s Mark, Boston Market and Game of Thrones are each running social campaigns with tongue in cheek political spins.

Maker’s Mark is taking the most direct approach. It’s pairing high profile left-right political duo James Carville and Mary Matalin in a campaign themed as “The Cocktail Party.” It includes a series of YouTube videos starring the two. One of its more creative tactics is selling branded yard signs with the slogan “I Support the Cocktail Party 2012.”

Boston Market is promoting the choice between chicken and turkey dishes as “Left Wing vs. Right Wing,” with a couple of clever videos mimicking negative political ads for each side. The intro to each video is worthy of a Saturday Night Live digital short.

The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones was one long political power struggle. It’s only fitting that the show’s marketing team recognized the opportunity to jump on the election wagon to keep buzz going for season three. The show is running a Twitter campaign asking fans to vote for who they think should run the kingdoms of Westeros using the hashtag #WesterosElections.

While brands such as Dr. Pepper and Dos Equis have found themselves caught up in controversy in a politically heated environment, these three are turning interest in the elections to their advantage.

Rift Launches ‘Save A Panda’ Campaign

Trion Worlds announced that they have launched a special charitable campaign. The company will donate $1 to Pandas International for every copy of of the Rift expansion Storm Legion that is pre-ordered through StormLegion.com until October 3.

Google Play Hits 25 Billion Downloads

Google announced today that the Google Play marketplace has seen over 25 billion downloads of its 675,000 apps. Google will celebrate the milestone by offering $.25 apps and discounts on movies, books, albums and magazines for the next five days.

Apple’s App Store hit the 25 billion downloads mark in March 2012; Apple has roughly 700,000 apps available on the App Store. Android has seen roughly a half billion activations, more than the 400 million iOS devices Apple reported earlier this Summer.
