Just Dance Series Topped One Million During Black Friday 2011

Ubisoft’s sales of Just Dance 3 solidified the game as the top dance game franchise in the world. The company estimates that the game sold over 700,000 copies in the U.S. on Wii and Xbox 360 on November 20-26, with the total eight entries in the franchise having sold over a million during the same period.

“Last week was an excellent start to the holiday shopping season for Ubisoft’s dance games,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. “The popularity of Ubisoft’s dance games continues to gain momentum as these games appeal to a wide variety of consumers because they are fun to play alone or with friends and family. Ubisoft is looking forward to its final dance game release of the calendar year with Just Dance 3 on the PlayStation Move, which releases next week on Tuesday, December 6.”

Kindle Fire Reportedly Becomes Number Two Tablet

Reports are that Black Friday sales of all Kindle tablets were up 400 percent over last year. iSuppli believes that Amazon will ship 3.9 million tablets by the end of 2011, giving it the second-place market share of nearly 14 percent behind Apple’s 66 percent share, greatly outpacing Samsung’s 4.8 percent market share.

“Our estimate is that Amazon.com has now sold 850,000 units direct from the Amazon.com site,” said Carter Nicholas, CEO of Datasource. “Total sales would be substantially larger. Amazon may have sold as many as 2 million or more so far when you consider all sales channels.”

Uncharted 3: Balancing The Multiplayer Beta Promotion

Sony and Subway ran a combined sponsorship for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception which include access to the game’s multiplayer beta. However, some wondered if the bonuses accrued from the game time would disrupt the competitive balance of the multiplayer when the full game released; Eric Monacelli at Naughty Dog answered those concerns.

“Players were allowed to level up their profile to level 35,” noted Monacelli. “Any cash, treasures and items unlocked during their time spent playing were not reset and carried over to the full retail version of the multiplayer. There were multiple unlockables such as the Subway T-shirt and Subway 5 dollar footlong taunt that were specific to the Taste for Adventure sweepstakes. If you were able to win one, these carried over as well.”

“Balancing the multiplayer gameplay to make it as enjoyable and fun as possible is always a goal that we strive to achieve,” he added. “During the Subway multiplayer experience, the level cap of rank 35 was put in place for this reason as it prohibited players from being able to rank up high enough to unlock some of the more powerful and effective weapons and kickbacks that can be earned in-game. Above all the most critical way we handle game balance is to make sure our matchmaking system works to appropriately match up players of similar rank and skill level.”

“Additionally, if players pre-ordered the game or purchased the Collector’s Edition at specific retailers some of the kickbacks, weapons and weapons mods that can be earned in-game could be unlocked early,” he said. “So even at the retail level there was a way for players, even those who might not have taken part in the Subway Taste for Adventure, to ensure they had early access to something helpful for their multiplayer game.”

“There was a lot of positive buzz and excitement around the promotion. The promotion itself was viewed as a way to get to experience Uncharted 3 ahead of release by the players who participated. The players who weren’t involved mostly wanted to wait for the full official retail release,” Monacelli concluded.

Best Buy Trolls Adjacent GameStop

GameStop stores are often located in strip malls, and it’s not uncommon to see them next to major big box retailers, which makes sense in a way given the amount of electronics sold at such brick-and-mortar locations. However, a Best Buy recently took advantage of its position adjacent to a GameStop with a sign, further enacted by using the font Impact MT.
