AFK: Honor Thy Grandmother

Gather the grandparents around and take a look at this sweet-weird-sweet tribute to somebody’s grandmother.  Our AFK moment of the day:

From F Yeah Tattoos: {link no longer active}

My Super Nintendo controller tattoo. It says “Mom Mom” because I got it in memory of my grandmother who died 06/08/04. I grew up playing Super Nintendo with her.

Starcraft II Gets The Razer

From the Razer press release:

“It has been a little over a decade since StarCraft first rocked the video game industry and began a legacy that continues to this day,” said Robert Razerguy Krakoff, president, Razer USA.   We’re extremely excited to be working with Blizzard Entertainment on the StarCraft II gaming peripherals and gear. The project is in the development phase with a focus on serving up innovative features while offering precision, cutting-edge technology, accuracy, speed and comfort.

The peripherals will include a tournament-grade mouse, keyboard and headset, as well as a specially-designed messenger bag.  Just another example of how the marketing of a game doesn’t have to just be on traditional media, but can extend to things (like peripherals) that target your core consumer.

AFK: Pac-Man Land

Today s AFK moment comes to us from technabob, who seems to be fighting a case of Pac-Man fever.

Six Flags Over Texas had a portion of its park devoted to the power pellet-eating hero. By the looks of things, we have no idea why this attraction never lasted.

AFK: Easy Light Write

Today’s AFK looks at a tool that makes light writing a snap (if you don t know what light writing is, take a look at the embedded video for Sprint).

The spray can style evokes the feeling of graffiti while the interchangeable LEDs allow for a number of different designs that can be captured through stop motion photography.

We want one of these right now.

AFK: Mario In Crochet

Michelle Rheaume is a crocheter who is a huge fan of Mario and his pals, and her work has made it online for anyone to see.

If you crochet like me (why are you laughing?), she even has patterns available for Mario, Luigi, Tanooki Mario and more.  And if you don’t know how to do it, she sells toys she makes herself out of her patterns.

This goes to show you that, no matter what the medium or method, fans of video games will always find a way to show their geek pride.  Next up we want to see a paper machete Bowser, okay?

July’s Most Played Wii Games

Interested in the games most people are playing on Nintendo Wii?   We’re not talking sales data or Metacritic rankings, but actual numbers tied to consumers playing games in the month of July.

Kodak {link no longer active} rounds them up:

1)    Super Smash Bros Brawl
2)    Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
3)    Animal Crossing: City Folk
4)    Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
5)    The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Let’s see how high Wii Sports Resort places in a few weeks after selling over 500K in North America in the first week alone.

AFK: You Think Today’s Game Writing Stinks?

Today’s AFK moment is a trip down nostalgia lane to the games of yesteryear, where proper grammar and correct punctuation were but extravagant luxuries reserved for the classiest of organizations.

Our favorite line is “Put fish in you mouth,” although “Dodongo dislikes smoke” strikes just the right tone with its artful use of the name Dodongo.

AFK: Wipeout HD Fury Looks Fantastic

Today’s AFK moment comes to us from Edge editor Alex Wiltshire and his keen eye for in-game photography.

Wipeout HD Fury may not look like much, but that’s until you slow down the action and look at it from a few different angles. The result is on his Flickr page, bursting with color and futuristic sleekness, worthy of any desktop.

If you want to know what the kids are playing and why, click on for a few more photos.
