Tackling Feminism One Tweet At A Time

Kickstarter employee and game designer Luke Crane sent out a tweet on November 26 asking, “Why are there so few lady game creators — Replies to his tweet have transformed into the stream #1reasonwhy, where game makers, game press and gamers at large are sharing their views on sexism in the industry. The thread is raising questions about the male-dominated culture still prevalent in games and how it translates to marginalization of women as game creators, game consumers, even in-game characters.

Indie programmer Tracy Hurley, one of the first responders to Crane’s tweet, wrote as her #1reasonwhy, “Because I’m told designing games to my PoV is ‘niche’ or being politically correct, while male oriented design is ‘normal’.”

Comments are still going strong at the time of this writing, and while they’re mostly supportive the stream isn’t without its debates. And where there’s an online debate, there will be trolls.

Polygon’s Justin McElroy may have put it best, targeting trolls and clueless men alike, “Dudes: Let #1reasonwhy wash over you and accept that maybe a lifetime as a dude hasn’t made you an expert on what life is like for women.”

Here Come Instagram Buttons

Instagram is making it easier for users to drive traffic back to their media-rich Instagram pages. The company announced the launch of iconic badges that users can embed on just about any web page, much like the Facebook and Twitter buttons that have become internet mainstays.

The introduction of Instagram badges comes not too long after the company’s announcement of web-based profiles now available for all users. While the move may seem as small as the badges themselves, the level of integration it’s meant to drive means Instagram could gain the same ever present visibility on the internet that Facebook and Twitter enjoy. It could prompt non-users to consider joining Instagram.

To get the step-by-step requires an Instagram account, but here’s how the site describes the new capability: “We’ve launched Instagram badges to help you link to and promote your Instagram web profile. Instagram badges are available in a range of sizes and can be added to your website, blog or anywhere that you want to link to your Instagram web profile.”

“There are two ways to access Instagram badges: Navigate to your Instagram web profile page. Click on your username to access the drop down menu and choose “Badges ” (visit Instagram.com/accounts/badges).”

“To create a badge for your brand or business, make sure you are logged in online to the brand or business account. Select the badge you’d like to use, copy the code and paste it into your site.”

Facebook ‘Friends’ Major Retailers

Facebook announced a plethora of new retail partnerships for the company’s most recent acquisition, Karma. The company acquired the gift giver app this past May and has since rebranded it Facebook Gifts.

Lee Linden, Karma’s co-founder and now head of Facebook Gifts, made the announcements at a press conference at FAO Schwarz in New York. The new gifting service is a virtual one stop shop for Facebook’s massive audience, as a way for users to conveniently share and receive gifts from over one hundred of their favorite brands directly from the site. Users will be able to personalize gifts with a message, pick a card, and even send gift options for the recipient to choose. They can also take advantage of Facebook’s most prized social staple items — birthdays, interests and events are readily available when deciphering what and when to give.

Facebook hopes the move will incentivize more consumers to get in the habit of purchasing directly from the platform, raising the company’s worth and garnering more ad business. The company makes a percentage of sales made through Facebook Gifts. The advertising opportunities are yet to be defined but obviously have great potential, for instance with targeted ads that essentially appear inside a virtual store. Another valuable aspect is the additional information the site will acquire such as home addresses and credit card data from users that haven’t yet been forthcoming with that information.

Facebook highlighted how new brands and services on board include babyGap, Fab, Brookstone, Dean & Deluca, L’Occitane, Lindt, ProFlowers, Random House, Inc. and NARS Cosmetics, as well as subscription services Hulu Plus, Pandora and Rdio. The service officially rolls out in the coming weeks leading up to the holidays and will include apps for iOS and Android.

Facebook Again Tweaks User News Feed

Facebook followed up the crowd-pleasing addition of a “Share” button on its mobile site with yet another change, and this one is getting mixed reactions.

The social network announced they will soon be rolling out a “Pages Only” mode for users over the next few weeks. Like most Facebook updates to algorithm or additions, the company often claims changes are safety nets for users who would otherwise be bombarded with spam.

That’s what Facebook product manager Will Cathcart wrote in an email to Read Write Web, “Facebook constantly tinkers with EdgeRank to make it more effective. The algorithm change in September was a bigger change than usual, but its goal was simply to cut down on spam in people’s news feed.”

It could be why Cathcart immediately shut down an interesting find earlier this week when a programmer uncovered a Facebook URL that appeared to show news feed completely unfiltered and algorithm free.

A “Pages Only” mode in theory could mean that users would be able to view friends in one feed and pages they’ve liked in a separate feed. The option is set to roll out next week and will appear in a “Pages Feed” option in the left hand corner of the Facebook homepage. While the revamp seems to benefit brands, it could mean the need to spend on ad dollars to get more exposure and reach target audiences.

That potential pitfall for brands has turned one power Facebook user, Dallas Mavericks owner and tech entrepreneur Mark Cuban, into a vocal opponent of the changes.

WHAT DO YOU THINK Will a “Pages Only” mode have a positive or negative effect on brand reach and engagement Share on our Facebook Poll.

“In the current system there is complete uncertainty on the cost. And even worse, at least for our size brands, you have to deal with the pricing for each posting, which is a time waster,” said Cuban. “I’m not trying to come off as some Facebook expert. I’m not. I have a bunch of little companies via SharkTank and other investments that use Facebook in the normal course of business. They shouldn’t have go to great lengths to figure out the nuances of Facebook audience reach. That complexity, IMHO, will come back to haunt Facebook.”

Facebook Mobile Gets Sharing Function, Finally

Facebook has finally announced the addition of sharing on its mobile website. With many now relying on mobile to access the social net, it’s a long-awaited feature for users including advertisers and brands. Facebook recently reported that mobile users are up to 604 million actives a month, with 20 percent of them accessing the site solely from their mobile devices.

Facebook has become increasingly reliant on mobile for growth. In its last earning report, the company said it generated 14 percent of advertising revenue from mobile alone. Now its mobile users can share branded content, making it easier for ads and sponsored stories to take on a viral effect.
