Cut A Superbowl Ad, Get To Work On The Next Transformers

Doritos has launched this year’s Crash the Super Bowl contest and is raising the stakes higher than ever before. In a message direct to fans, acclaimed Hollywood film director Michael Bay and Doritos have announced that the grand prize will be an opportunity to work with Bay on the next installment of the Transformers movie franchise, along with a shot at a $1 million bonus.

The Crash the Super Bowl contest invites consumers to create homemade ads for the Doritos brand, with two finalist consumer-created spots ultimately airing during the Super Bowl broadcast. One of those ads will be selected by America’s votes; the other by the Doritos brand team. The finalist whose ad scores highest on the USA Today Ad Meter rankings will be awarded the grand prize-career opportunity working with Bay. In addition, if a consumer-generated Doritos ad scores No. 1 on the USA Today Ad Meter, the Doritos brand will award its creator a $1 million bonus. The Super Bowl XLVII broadcast is set for Sunday, February 3, 2013, on CBS.

Facebook Takes A Page From Reddit

Facebook is currently testing two new features meant to elevate more engaging comments on brand and subscriber pages, and ultimately increase post interaction.

The social net announced the first new feature being tested last week, which gives users the ability to allow page administrators to reply directly to comments on a post. It’s also designed to make it easier for users to respond directly to individual comments instead of simply adding to a comment thread. The new ‘reply’ action will be located near the ‘like’ link below comments. Users will be able to reply to the original post or new comments added to the thread.

On Monday, Facebook announced its second change. This one is meant to optimize wall posts with ‘ranked comments’, evaluating more engaging comments via likes, responses and hides then pushing them to the top of the wall while weaving out those with low engagement.

COMMENTS Do you think Facebook’s new features will benefit overall engagement on branded pages Thumbs up or thumbs down Join your peers on LinkedIn to see what they think.

If the test is successful, it would allow Facebook to promote more interesting and engaging content, as well as enable more conversations about posted content across the site.

YouTube Channels Get The Funding Axe

YouTube has begun renewing funding for channels it partnered with last year, but not all 160 channels that were part of the program are making the cut. Google launched its YouTube program to support premium content channels last year with an estimated budget of $100 million. Content producers were given as much as $5 million to create shows that were exclusive to YouTube for a year. Much like a TV network, YouTube is now evaluating the hits and misses.

YouTube said which shows get their funding canceled comes down how much budget they were given and how they’re performing. For performance, the site is gauging not only views but also ‘watch time’, a new metric it began measuring and including in video rankings in late October.

Losing funding doesn’t mean the shows are necessarily canceled, they just won’t have YouTube’s money to play with. The company hasn’t said which shows it’s keeping in its roster but it estimated it would reinvest in about 40 percent of them. YouTube show rankings such as Deadline’s could be a good indicator of which shows return.

Sharing Beats A Like

Ayzenberg’s Keith Pape recently talked with iMedia Connection about how getting people to share brand experiences and make them part of their lifestyle is where the real payoff lies for social media marketing.

Pape, who serves as Ayzenberg’s VP of social, mobile and emerging media, pointed to efforts such as Red Bull sponsoring Felix Baumgartner’s record skydive, which he said go beyond campaigning for sales. Rather it’s how a brand can foster affinity and invest in future customers.

“Companies like Red Bull, BMW and others, they’re always planning for their future,” said Pape. “Everything that they do [has] touch points where you understand where you can buy a Red Bull, how you can be part of it, but it’s also always about the future. They’re always finding the diamonds in the rough, like Felix and his big jump.”

“As a brand, they make sure that the next audience and the audience before that are starting to be integrated into what Red Bull means, and probably products they haven’t created yet. But they’re carrying us down that funnel already to put [us] in that consideration. So when I’m in that moment now, next year, five years from now, when I see that, it’s impactful for me and it helps me go and say, I’ve had so many wonderful impressions from them, that’s the choice I’m going to make.”

Not every brand needs to launch into space. According to Pape, some simply get where and how to engage their customers to the point that they become part of their day to day.

“I think American Express is a great example. The way that they’re integrating with Foursquare and with Facebook, they’re experimenting a lot and they’re getting you to commit your card and your information as part of your experiences, as part of your daily life, and making sure that the mobile component is there. So whether you see it in an iAd or you see it on one of their other mobile platforms, or you’re just organically checking in through Facebook, wherever you’re at, they’re giving you an opportunity to interact with their brand and to naturally tell your friends about it.”

What should brands be asking about taking this longer view approach

Pape said, “That’s part of the creative agency’s job is to really go and think about that. What’s this moment about What’s the opportunity here to be authentic to not only close the sale, but to make sure that we’re making it bigger than this one sale ”

MIT Predicts The Future — On Twitter

With brands currently willing to purchase “trending topics” on Twitter at a premium, how much more valuable would it be to know what’s trending even before Twitter does

MIT professor Professor Devavrat Shah and student Stanislav Nikolov have developed an algorithm that can do exactly that, and they claim it has 95 percent accuracy and can make predictions up to five hours in advance. The program doesn’t use pattern recognition because, according to Shah, there’s no set pattern to how things trend on Twitter.

“You [could] try to train for when the jump happens, and how much of a jump happens,” says Shah. “The problem with this is, I don’t know that things that trend have a step function. There are a thousand things that could happen.”

Instead, their algorithm uses sample sets against real-time activity. Once a topic begins to resemble one of the sample sets, it’s given a “vote” on whether it could trend. More votes points to more of a chance it will trend.

Shah and Nikolov’s ability to see into the future seems sci-fi, but the bottom line for their creation is what it could mean for Twitter’s advertising prospects. With the current price for a trending promo spot falling around $150K (with a bidding element), Twitter could be looking at this new algorithm as a major commercial selling point. There is also talk of using the formula in situations to predict stock prices, ticket sales, and more.

The MIT duo will present the concept at the Interdisciplinary Workshop on Information and Decision in Social Networks at MIT in November 8 and 9.

Pop-Up Toy Store

Walmart is testing an idea in partnership with Mattel in Toronto where shoppers will encounter a virtual store in a subway station.

The event is being described as Canada’s first pop-up virtual toy store, enabling QR code-based shopping of Mattel brands — including hot toys from Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and Thomas & Friends brands — to holiday shoppers.

The pop-up is located in the city’s massive PATH underground walkway, a retail concourse that connects downtown buildings and and an array of businesses to Toronto’s Union Station rail commuter hub. It may find a ready pool of virtual shoppers, as it will run for four weeks in the same location where Wells.ca tested a QR-enabled store in April.

The virtual toy store “features two walls of three-dimensional toy images,” according to a press release. Shoppers simply scan a QR code with their smartphone to purchase the hottest Mattel holiday toys from Walmart Canada, who also provides free shipping. While traditional gift-givers can still purchase toys online or in-store, the virtual toy store aims to revolutionize what it means to window shop.
