Twitter Turns More Visual, Mobile Friendly With UI Upgrades

Twitter has launched a major upgrade that gives users more personalization options on their page. The new look is reminiscent of changes introduced by Facebook when it launched Timeline earlier this year.

The most prominent change is the addition of a cover photo for users’ profile pages. The dimensions differ from Facebook’s Timeline covers. The effect is the same in making photos the first big impression when visiting Twitter profiles. The cover photo appears no matter where users access Twitter accounts, whether online or through a mobile device.

The photo stream on the left side has become much more prominent, encouraging people to browse through photos more easily and perhaps factor tweeted images into whether they choose to follow a user. The change should give brands the opportunity to further reinforce their style and messaging through photos.

Twitter has also redesigned its apps for mobile and tablets to reflect the changes and add new functions, such as the ability to swipe through photo streams. The company calls the new features “our first mobile strategy.”

Speaking on NBC’s Today show, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo described the new version of its iPad app.

“We rebuilt Twitter for iPad from the ground up to make it fast, beautiful and easy to use,” Costolo said.

While the changes were announced nearly two weeks ago, some are estimating that less than ten percent of brands have taken advantage of the new features.

What Do You Fear?

A new ARG for Hunted, a new Cinemax drama revolving around the ominous-sounding Byzantium Security International utilizes elements from the fictional company’s name and image baiting the Occupy movement. Out-of-home ads were placed on and around Wall Street, and banners on WallStreetJournal.com really rubbed that in.

They direct people to a game at ByzantiumTests.com, a five-part job application that’s appropriately byzantine. Developed in part with a cognitive psychologist, the tests combine Facebook integration, emotion recognition technology, logic and spatial puzzles, personality tests and subliminal commands. A magician from The Magic Circle, a London-based magician society, helped further trick out the site.

For outreach, writers and bloggers were sent a wooden puzzle, in the shape of the Byzantium Security logo, that was a challenge to unlock — with a flash drive inside containing media materials.

Three Campaigns Get Creative With Election Buzz

Interest in this year’s election is starting to crescendo as voting day nears, and three brands have found a way to embrace the buzz despite the usual contentious atmosphere. Maker’s Mark, Boston Market and Game of Thrones are each running social campaigns with tongue in cheek political spins.

Maker’s Mark is taking the most direct approach. It’s pairing high profile left-right political duo James Carville and Mary Matalin in a campaign themed as “The Cocktail Party.” It includes a series of YouTube videos starring the two. One of its more creative tactics is selling branded yard signs with the slogan “I Support the Cocktail Party 2012.”

Boston Market is promoting the choice between chicken and turkey dishes as “Left Wing vs. Right Wing,” with a couple of clever videos mimicking negative political ads for each side. The intro to each video is worthy of a Saturday Night Live digital short.

The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones was one long political power struggle. It’s only fitting that the show’s marketing team recognized the opportunity to jump on the election wagon to keep buzz going for season three. The show is running a Twitter campaign asking fans to vote for who they think should run the kingdoms of Westeros using the hashtag #WesterosElections.

While brands such as Dr. Pepper and Dos Equis have found themselves caught up in controversy in a politically heated environment, these three are turning interest in the elections to their advantage.

Music Focused MySpace Readies For Re-Launch

The long awaited launch of a revamped MySpace is underway, and it looks like it wants to be the MTV – Music Television, not the reality show channel – for a new generation. The new stewards of the social site, which includes part owner and creative director Justin Timberlake, have long promised that their revamped MySpace would again become the hub for popular music, aspiring musicians and their fans.

Speaking as the site entered beta testing last year, Timberlake said, “There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. MySpace has the potential to be that place.”

In that sense, the first peek doesn’t contain any major surprises. As the teaser video shows, a slick new UI resembling a cross between Facebook and Pinterest seems to be loaded with features for easily posting and pimping music. The video also gives a glimpse at tools useful to aspiring artists, such as the ability to promote shows and track and identify influential fans.

News Corp. bought the once mighty MySpace for $580 million in 2005. It unloaded the site last year for $35 million to Specific Media , which includes Timberlake as an investor. According to ComScore, traffic to MySpace fell by half between 2010 and 2011 but the site has since stabilized. It drew 26 million unique visitors in April, a slight uptick from late last year.

Be Your Own Bond

Fans of 007 get the chance to live vicariously through their favorite British spy in a new digital campaign. Launched to coincide with the release of the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall the interactive campaign features Daniel Craig and new Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe (as Sévérine).

Called “Crack the Case,” the mini film takes viewers on a train through snowy Siberia, challenging them to complete several tests while dodging Soviet-esque villains. Die-hard fans will notice that replica James Bond film props, such as the Spectre ring from Dr. No and the Faberge egg used in From Russia with Love and Goldeneye, make cameo appearances.

In an immersive experience, viewers are prompted to enter their name, gender and even have the option of uploading a photo (or continuing with a “secret identity.”)

A 46-foot Wide Interactive Comic

The popular webcomic xkcd has posted a massive black-and-white drawing called “Click and Drag”. Explore it from every possible angle by dragging your way through the image in its relatively limited frame. Explore artist Randall Munroe’s mountainous landscape from side to side, delve into the subterranean depths or sweep the skies looking for airplanes, levitating jellyfish and other oddities. It’s an amazing accomplishment, packed with Easter eggs, such as a Super Mario Bros.-esque series of pipes, which extend down, down, down into vertical caves with “walls worn smooth by billions of tumbling Mario corpses.” Browse a mashup of the full image here. This isn’t xkcd’s first ambitious art project. If you missed it, be sure to revisit Munroe’s awe-inspiring look at “Lakes and Oceans” around the world.
