Celebrate The 2nd Amendment On IOS Devices

The National Rifle Association has released a shooting game for iOS devices. NRA: Practice Range allows you to select and shoot a number of firearms at virtual targets, and provides safety and education tips alongside an overwhelming sense that the NRA is doing this on purpose to get a rise out of people. Up to nine guns can be taken out and fired, using either gyroscopic or analog controls.

NRA: Practice Range is the NRA’s new mobile nerve center, delivering one-touch access to the NRA network of news, laws, facts, knowledge, safety tips, educational materials and online resources.

No App Data For You

Facebook is no longer providing daily, weekly and monthly traffic measured to within 100,000 users for apps on its platform, instead turning to less granular data and reporting periodic app rankings. The decision comes conspicuously on the heels of a firestorm over Instagram. The Facebook owned photo sharing site was said to have lost millions of users over the holidays, based on data publicized by Inside Network’s AppData.

Now the data stream that services such as AppData rely on is no longer available. In its place, Facebook will list apps by popularity in the AppCenter and provide a loose metric by which to estimate user counts based on where apps sit in the rankings.

AppData’s stream goes kaput

Facebook’s reasoning is that being completely transparent about the ever-fluid number of users for apps has been problematic for developers. Snafus rooted in data reporting have in the past showed user counts as plummeting, even down to zero in some cases. It may have even hindered innovation, according to the social net. Facebook says having their user base constantly reported to the public could be instilling fear in app makers, making them reluctant to introduce changes to their apps for fear of fluctuations in users.

The World According To Xbox And PlayStation

If you’re in North America or you read a lot of game industry news, you’re liable to think Xbox has leapfrogged PlayStation as the favorite among console gamers. Not so worldwide, according to Facebook fans.

Social media analytics firm Socialbakers used a new function being provided by Facebook that maps out fans by region to break down where in the world fans favor either Xbox or PlayStation. It’s worth noting the breakdown is not for current systems Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, rather looking at where each console brand has the largest number of fans. So while Xbox 360 is winning the console race in this generation, it’s safe to say Sony’s stats are being helped by its multiple generations of PlayStation console and handheld hardware, and the 150 million plus units the PlayStation 2 is said to have sold worldwide over its lifetime.

Socialbakers says it’s uncovering other interesting results using Facebook’s new function, for instance that Pepsi’s fans outnumber Coca-Cola’s in the US. The firm told Venture Beat that Facebook’s new tool is going to help unmask brands that have been buying fans, for instance with findings showing large fan distribution in countries such as India and the Indonesia for brands that have no presence there.

Facebook Timeline Changing, Again

Changes that Facebook announced to Timeline in late December are starting to show up for some users. Last month, ABC News revealed that Facebook is eliminating elements such as thumbnail images for Friends, Photos and Map from the tab below users’ Timeline image.

At the time, a Facebook rep had told the network, “This is a new design Facebook is testing with a small percentage of people to make navigating Timeline even easier.”

The change is now rolling out slowly, and apparently starting with users in New Zealand. People there are reporting that the thumbnails are indeed gone, replaced with tabs that as a default setting list About, Friends, Photos, and a drag down menu for more options. That “More” tab is where Facebook’s more meaningful change comes in, where there’s now a functionality to manage what appears at top, and with the option to link to Instagram and Spotify right from the tabs.

Facebook Offers Settlement in Sponsored Story Suit

If Facebook and its properties such as Instagram are truly toying with the idea that they can easily weave users and their content into advertising, it may not be an easy road. Just weeks after an uproar over Instagram’s change of service terms, which people perceived to mean their photos could be used in ads, Facebook is facing backlash against sponsored stories. This time it’s litigious. A class action suit has been filed in federal court against the company’s use of profiles in sponsored stories. Facebook is trying to settle.

A pending class action and proposed settlement notice for the suit Angel Fraley v. Facebook, Inc. sent to users states, “Facebook unlawfully used the names, profile pictures, likenesses, and identities of Facebook users in the United States to advertise or sell products and services through Sponsored Stories without obtaining those users’ consent.”

The notice states that no judgment has been made, only that Facebook is offering a $20 million settlement that has preliminary court approval. According to the terms, that can translate to up to $10 for users who agree to the terms and file a claim. If claims exceed the amount of the offered settlement, Facebook will instead pay the money to charities defined by the lead plaintiffs in the case. The deadline for users to accept and file a claim or object to the settlement is May 2, 2013. There’s a web site with details of the suit including pending actions and deadlines at www.fraleyfacebooksettlement.com.
