Feature: Eve Reality In The Incarna

Eve Online has one of the most unique, dedicated fanbases online. The devotion that players have to the MMO is almost incomparable to anything out there, and for the hundreds of thousands of Eve Online followers around the world, the game is real and tangible to them. It is from this reality that the “Eve is Real” {link no longer active} campaign was born, promoted with the help of the Ayzenberg Group. We spoke with Daniel Block, Senior Director of Customer Acquisition at CCP, about the campaign and other aspects of the Eve universe.

[a]list: Where did the idea for the Incarna program come from and why the name ‘Eve is Real’?

Daniel Block: A large group of CCP old timers got together to try and get to the core of what makes tick and grow year over year. It came back to the fact that Eve is player driven in the most true sense, it is real in a way most games aren’t. Not because we live a dystopian future, but it takes the concept of risk and reward to heart. Every choice you make as a player has an impact, that is real. Why shouldn’t we build a “museum” of that real experience from a players perspective

[a]list: What sort of response have you gotten to the promotion so far?

Daniel Block: Pretty good, we get a bit of “real derp.derp!” of course. But we’re over 1500 shared images and 300 original videos so far in the first weeks. It has unlocked some gems that were previously shared only within player corporation forums, I’d say quite successful.

[a]list: What do you think it says about the commitment people have to the franchise when you see things like real life pictures of the Amarrian crown?

Daniel Block: We think it shows the power of the promise of Eve. Eve is a living work of art, we like to call it surreality. Eve is hyper-real from a graphics approach, we designed it that way including creating a whole-ly new graphics engine (again) for Incarna.

Amarrian crown

[a]list: Not to tip your hand, but are their any photos or videos that really stand out to you so far?

Daniel Block: “The Door”  {link no longer active} which is poignant in its humor about the frustration/joy of the next wave of Incarna. “My little Eve  {link no longer active} a brilliant spot on piece of work derived from our newest trailer.

[a]list: Was it important to include the viral/social aspect to the voting in order to draw in not just Eve players but anyone on the internet?

Daniel Block: It helped, but the reality is you have to build it first so people will come. This is not a one time effort, we’ll be building on this as a statement of what Eve is, from a players perspective. At some point critical mass is achieved and the huge number of cool pieces become their own engine for Eve.

[a]list: Were the contest prizes of a GeForce video card and an Alienware computer designed specifically to appeal to Eve‘s largest fans?

Daniel Block: Mostly, we just like Nvidia and Dell. *laughs* They’re great partners and make good hardware.

Taggart Transdimensional recruitment poster.

[a]list: There’s been some… let’s call it consternation among some fans over the inclusion of virtual item sales in Eve Online.  How do you reach out to concerned fans and salve what concerns they might have?

Daniel Block: It’s a bit tough as we’ve always got a vocal minority and a silent majority. A good sized group of the most vocal understandably made a huge deal out of “pay to win” after we failed to clearly present the virtual items and how we plan to evolve them. In order to reach out to them we needed to clarify things and need to continue to do so through good old-fashioned communication. While the silent majority has been using the NeX store at a good clip, we still need to make sure that our players know that sexy chic future spaceship pants aren’t going to lead to ammunition or uber ships in the virtual store. We launched our NeX store with a small number of pure vanity items, we’re going to launch a ship re-skinning service the same way soon (think paint jobs). More simple services will follow. We’d bring more out faster, but there is only a small team working on this project.

[a]list: Shifting gears, what sort of reception did you get to Dust 514 at E3 and how are you hoping to carry that into the games launch next year?

Daniel Block: A good one, it was quite stunning to get the coverage we got and being on stage with Sony was pretty amazing. It spoke volumes to us of their faith in Dust, the Eve universe and CCP.

[a]list: Daniel, thanks.

Epic President Mike Capps Wonders If iPhones Will Replace Consoles

The Xbox 360 and PS3 will have longer life cycles than almost any console before them, but they will almost certainly be replaced in a year or two. However, the progress of mobile has Epic Games President Mike Capps more interested.

“As a middleware provider and as a game developer it sure would be nice if all the different platforms were really similar for us it would make it easier to work between them with maybe just a few differentiating features we could take advantage of. I’d hate to say that the Wii U is late; in fact, you could almost argue that it’s early,” Capps began. “They’re aiming for a point beyond the current generation they’re just not leapfrogging it. One can certainly envision a future a couple years down the road where we have some significantly leapfrogged generation and then the Wii U again becomes a system that’s not easily portable between the other platforms. But honestly, I think the bigger challenge for us is mobile.”

“Before the problem was between the consoles and PC where they had very different levels. The power of your PC could be 100 times the power of somebody else’s PC. This time the problem could be mobile. If you look at the ridiculous acceleration of iPhone hardware and technology, trying to find a sweet spot for tech to make your mobile game… I mean, what would your mobile game look like in 2015 Who knows how fast that’s going to operate, but you can bet it’s going to be faster than an Xbox 360,” added Capps. “So I think that’s the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It’s about how do we deal with iPhone 8… if you watch where the gamers are going that’s where they are. Your iPhone 8 will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound. So really, what’s the point of those next-gen consoles It’s a very interesting situation to be looking at. That’s what we’re starting to think about more… not how do we scale from some Nintendo platform to some other future console.

Zynga Wins Vostu Preliminary Injunction

Zynga successfully won a preliminary injunction against Vostu, as a result of its lawsuit alleging that the developer copied its games. The Brazilian company is biting back, appealing and releasing a statement.

“Vostu will vigorously appeal this ruling, which we firmly believe has no merit, read the statement by Votsu. “This is a desperate and misguided legal tactic by Zynga, a foreign company with no real Brazilian roots — a company that has failed to secure a foothold in the local marketplace and failed to win consumers who have clearly shown they prefer the superior games created by Vostu s Brazilian team. We are confident the Court of Appeals will reverse the injunction, when presented with Vostu’s position and its full story.

“Vostu has been deeply entrenched with the Brazilian economy by heavily investing in local marketing, helping brands such as Guarana advertise, doing creative deals with Brazil’s most popular star, Ivete Sangalo, and conducting in-depth market research analyses with Brazilian consumers, it continued. “We remain confident that Vostu will continue to maintain its dominance in the industry by offering the best gaming entertainment to Brazil and to employ the best and brightest Brazilians in the gaming industry. We are proud to be the first and most prominent gaming company in Brazil and being able to entertain our users with highly localized and relevant entertainment.”

Facebook Testing ‘Happening Now’ Sidebar

Facebook is right now testing a new real-time feature on user’s home feeds. This will display more of an at-a-glance a list of what their friends are sharing, who they are adding as friends and displaying check-in notifications.

Called the Happening Now sidebar, it right now sits on the right side of a user s feed and provides real-time updates. The advantages is that it gives users a chance to see how their connections are interacting with one another without navigating away from their main feed.

Right now there’s potential for overlap with the news feed, so it might need to be filtered for real time info along with things that might not warrant inclusion in the newsfeed. Another good inclusion may be specific events and the used of Facebook Places check-ins to let people know about their locations and interactions outside of Facebook.

“We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and liking , as these actions are being taken on Facebook, “said Facebook. “This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users,  just a fraction of a percent. In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.”

Google Rebuked By Microsoft On Patent Tussle

Google’s Chief Legal Counsel David Drummond, recently let loose a volley against his company’s competitors. He asserted that Apple and Microsoft are teaming up by using key former Novell patents in an attempt to stop the growth of its Android mobile operating system.

Microsoft PR head Frank Shaw responded with a large image of an email he had with Google’s legal counsel Kent Walker, which turned down an offer for a partnership over the patents. “Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no,” he added on Twitter.
