Activision CEO Sees ‘Massive Unofficial Ecosystem’ Of Competitive Game Content

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg believes that eSports is going to be “happening with or without us.” Having one of the top competitive franchises in the world in Call of Duty, he called the franchise’s first $1 million tournament “massive”.

“Games have become the biggest unofficial sports league in the world right now,” he said. “There’s a massive unofficial ecosystem of content, whether it be on YouTube or Wikipedia pages, dedicated to the world’s most dedicated gamers.”

While Hirshberg is enthusiastic about online, he was less optimistic about TV broadcasts. “I feel like there’s an organic thing that’s happening,” he said. “I’m more interested in supercharging that thing that’s already happening organically than transforming it into an existing ecosystem like television, because they’re not always compatible. It would be like saying what are the opportunities for YouTube videos on television.”

Siri Coming To Honda Cars

Honda announced that it will be integrating Siri support into its 2013 Honda Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models. Owners with a compatible iPhone running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks and using Eyes Free mode; Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and minimizes distractions even more by keeping the iOS device’s screen from lighting up.

“iPhone has become so integral to people’s lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles, ” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning, American Honda. “Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer’s ever-changing needs.”

Jenova Chen Wants To Make Artistic Games Profitable

Journey was one of the more acclaimed games of 2012, and is even still scooping up awards from industry events. However, the game was delayed and ended up only breaking even for developer thatgamecompany, something company founder Jenova Chen wants to correct in any future titles.

“The current stage of our goal is to create a game that’s actually going to make a commercial success, that’s actually going to make the publishers or investors say, ‘There’s a huge market there. We should put money into seriously developing these high quality games,'” Chen said.

The money thing clearly affects Chen, as he reflects on meeting many young designers. “They say, ‘Wherever we go to find jobs, people always say you need to focus on how to trap the player, keep them playing the game, get them addicted to it, how can you increase the return of investment, make them pay more money,'” Chen said. “And that’s not the job they want.”

“The money guy hasn’t seen any potential,” Chen added. “They are not convinced it’s worth the money to put in all this hard work and effort to make something very emotional and artistic. They don’t see the money there.”

Chen was reticent to talk about his future plans, but he did drop some hints. “This is definitely where the money is flowing,” Chen said. “I think free-to-play is both exciting and also really dangerous. So we’re still testing out what will go there. How are you going to make people feel emotion when they’re constantly on guard that you’re manipulating them to make money That’s something I’m excited to look into, but I can’t commit and say it’s definitely going to be free or definitely going to be mobile.”

Chen also didn’t think that Kickstarter was the way for him to go personally. “The other thing is I think most of the very successful Kickstarters are by veteran celebrity developers who made these games people in their 30s and 40s used to love,” Chen said. “They’re the people who have loads of money to donate. And I’m thinking that most of the people who played our games are teenagers and college students. How much money are they going to have to donate So I think it’s not my time yet.”

On the subject of disruptive consoles like Ouya, Chen said, “I like chaos. Quoting Joker, ‘Chaos is fair.’ In consoles, it’s very difficult to create a fair competition at this point, but with all these new consoles coming out, it’s very exciting. I’m sure we’re going to get the best out of them. I don’t think they all will survive, but the best will. And we will have a cheaper console out there that’s going to be indie-friendly [with] digital distribution.”

Chen wasn’t as positive about next-gen systems, saying, “I don’t know what’s going to surprise me. It seems like it will be the high-end console with a better graphics card and stronger computing power. But I don’t think there will be anything that’s going to be revolutionary like the Wii, for example.”

Meteor Parodies No Funny Matter, Says Comedian

Last week Twitter was an epicenter of news and video links about the massive Russian meteorite explosion.  Hours after the event, there was already one meteor-related parody account registered and pining for attention.  Of all people, a comedian stepped up and this time stopped the distasteful trend of parody usernames that take advantage of public events.

Comedian Jake Fogelnest  wagged his finger in disapproval of the first meteor masquerader, and created an account for himself to extinguish any and all momentum for future meteor-related accounts.

Fogelnest put out this statement: “I felt a responsibility to protect the public. I think it was effective in shaming them into realizing what they were doing was wrong. I hope they felt bad. They are a bad person.”

Parody accounts are no stranger to the 175 million registered users on Twitter. They often generate massive followings, but with very little interesting content to justify their existence. Marco Rubio’s infamous water bottle sip during his response to the State of Union speech sprang @rubiowaterbottle.  The account never really took off, deemed no competition to the rapid wit of the Twitter community.

Fogelnest isn’t against the idea of fake accounts, he just believes there is a time and place.  Like the Russian meteor, hearing that from a comedian just might be a once in a hundred year event.

YouTube, For Lovers And Haters

Yesterday YouTube posted six Valentine’s Day playlists featuring 69 videos (good one, guys) that offered something for everyone, whether those gushing with romance or wallowing in misery on the lover’s holiday.

YouTube holds a special place in its virual heart for Valentine’s Day.  The platform was conceived on February 14, registering its web domain name on that day.

YouTube’s cupid for the job this year,Trends Manager Kevin Allocca, kicked things off with this quip: “Whether you’re toasting St. Valentine with champagne and long-stemmed roses or fighting off nausea at the sight of every teddy bear and heart-shaped cupcake, YouTube is the place to be. This is all rather apropos given YouTube’s roots.”

The playlists are still accessible. There are interesting information bites – wondering where the term “friend zone” came from An episode of “Friends,” actually. Curious how the brain looks like when a person is in love It’s hard to describe.

The rest of the collection offers romantic videos such as most-viewed marriage proposals and love songs along with addictive if painful compilations such as marriage proposal fails, bad pickup lines {video no longer available} and examples of how oblivious, and sometimes lame, people can be to the outside world when they’re madly in love.
