What #AppleLive Tells Us About Apple’s New Social Strategy

Apple is notorious for the relative radio silence the massive brand has on social media. It doesn’t have any official social channels with the exception of the Tumblr launched for the iPhone 5c which has now been taken down. The page, despite being made on an inherently social platform, was deliberate in maintaining one-way communication.

This appears to have changed entirely with Apple’s September 9th announcements. There was a very clear urging to round up the conversation on social surrounding the #AppleLive hashtag. According to Twitter, #AppleLive generated more than 2.4 million tweets and peaked at 32,305 tweets per minute as users followed the keynote.

In spite of much-publicized keynote streaming issues, Apple’s social team triumphed on, pushing out major product points with sharp product photography creating an elegant real-time effect for the major tech event. They key hub of the event wasn’t necessarily on a social platform, however. It was on Apple’s own website.

It seems Apple is beginning to see the value of social media, but is doing it in a very parsimonious manner where they are removed from the pressures as a brand to interact closely with the public. You had to visit Apple’s site to see their own version of a social feed– basically a wall consisting of tweet-like posts mixed in with carefully picked quotes and tweets from other actual social networks. Doing this, Apple maintained its position in being the ultimate source of information on their big day, firmly being in control of the conversation, dispensing tidbits of information to a very eager public.

Apple is now half-way social. They see the value in incorporating their brand’s advocates within their own messaging. They don’t see the value in owned social channels beyond their YouTube (comments disabled, of course). Apple’s Twitter account to this day still has not been used.

There are reports that Apple is in transition from this old “single narrator” model, to a more modern approach using diverse voices. The next step for Apple is beginning to open the lines of communication with its brand advocates and really bring about discussion. Apple is definitely one of the last major brands to make this huge transition and is doing so with very small and calculated steps.

In an increasingly communicative time where brands are becoming more and more like the cool friends in someone’s timeline, it was beginning to feel like Apple was staid and antisocial. When it comes down to it, what Apple does is to create products that enable us to communicate in this way. It is clear Apple has reached a ‘tipping point’ and it will be interesting for all to see how they will work to retain their secretive culture while joining the rest of us.

Gameplay Trailers For the Week

It’s time once again to recap some of the best video game trailers to hit the web this past week, so without further ado, let’s hit the ground running!

The new trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Unity highlights one of the game’s new co-op missions, in which players can work together to execute a heist and earn big rewards as a result. However, they’ll need to be careful, as each time they alert a guard, they’ll lose a small amount of their precious bounty. Unity will release on November 11th for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The very bizarre side-scrolling strategy game Murasaki Baby will make its debut on PlayStation Vita next Tuesday, and to celebrate its release, the development team showcased a new behind-the-scenes trailer, showing where it came up with its spooky design for the game.

With the announcement that Sega’s Alien: Isolation has gone gold, the publisher has released the first of a new set of trailers that ask the simple question, “How will you survive ” In Isolation, it’s a matter of surviving against a horde of Aliens, rather than fighting back with pulse rifles or other weapons. (Note: it’s a little bloody.)

There’s a minor glitch in Madden NFL 15 that turns one of the players into a tiny player on the field. In addition to fixing the glitch, EA Sports has opted to celebrate the legacy of the Tiny Titan, complete with an interview and a game-winning touchdown.

Finally, Riot Games has announced a new series of behind-the-scenes vignettes that look at some of the best League of Legends players in the world. Titled Road To Worlds, the first part recently debuted on the company’s eSports channel, and the other two will follow in a few weeks’ time.

Zappos Wants To Make Sure Your Pants Are Mobile Ready

There’s a whole lot of talk about being mobile-first and mobile ready, and for the most part, marketers are mainly concerned with what’s on the screen. Amid Apple’s announcements on September 9th, Zappos unleashed a little bit of mean fun at a basic problem surrounding these larger mobile screens– that they might be a little harder to actually carry with you.

Behold: mobile ready pants. Zappos has the exclusive on pants with just the right size pockets for you to carry your fancy new iPhone 6 Plus. How else were you going to carry around your phablet

Funny Or Die And Volkswagen Drive A Car Through Target

When online comedy behemoth Funny Or Die teams up with Volkswagen America, some seriously funny business goes down. The new online spot takes the same form of the types of skits that made a name for the comedy site.

“Funny or Die is one of the most recognized and sought-after brands in comedy today so we knew they would be the perfect partner to amplify Volkswagen’s unique sense of humor,” said VP of Marketing at Volkswagen, Vinay Shahani in a statement on MediaPost.

A hapless boyfriend learns he must impress his girlfriend’s parents by transforming his greyscale bachelor pad apartment in just 2 hours. A strange, overly intrusive neighbor with a devil-may-care attitude is there to step in and make the magic happen. What ensues is a trip through Target that can only happen with a little cinematic magic and the awesome handling of a Volkswagen Golf, of course.

Sneak peeks of the comedy spot will be airing on TBS, alongside Big Bang Theory and TBS movies, a boost to drive viewers to the full spot on Funny Or Die. Turner Broadcasting has been representing Funny Or Die’s advertising with the goal to “provide brands access to premium comedic content, while offering promotional scale with Turner’s portfolio of premium brands like TBS and Adult Swim.”

Study Says Social Advertising Converts More Customers

When it comes converting customers, social advertising is the best at it, according to a new study by Aol Platforms in which 500 million clicks and 15 million conversions were analyzed in the first quarter of 2014 to determine how and where users made purchasing decisions. The best platform on social media By and large, the study showed that YouTube was key for not just introducing products, but influencing purchasing decisions, too.

According to CEO of Convertro, Jeff Zwelling, this is no happenstance. Google’s search results give key preferential treatment to YouTube video results. “YouTube’s own search volume and preferential positioning on Google’s results help drive large amounts of traffic, of course. But when you get to YouTube, the content is rich, descriptive, and usually helpful,” said Zwelling.

The infographic below delineates the purchasing funnel from product introduction to the last stage prior to a product being sold. YouTube shows to be strongest at the last stage, and Twitter appears to be the least effective of the social networks for influencing purchases.

YouTube To Run Ads For ‘Video Game High School’ Starting Next Month

By Sahil Patel

Next up on YouTube’s ongoing efforts to advertise its top channels and creators: Freddie Wong and the third and final season of his successful web series “Video Game High School.”

As first reported by The Wall Street Journal, YouTube will run a multi-platform advertising campaign for the web series. Similar to previous efforts for creators and channels like Rosanna Pansino, Bethany Mota, Vice News, and “Epic Rap Battles of History,” YouTube will place ads everywhere from billboards, bus stops, subways, and subway platforms in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, to relevant websites and video platforms online. (For instance, ads for Vice News, which was part of YouTube’s second wave of advertising, showed up on the New York Times home page.)

While YouTube’s decision to include Wong in its campaigning shouldn’t come as a surprise — the filmmaker has close to 7 million subscribers on YouTube through his RocketJump (formerly FreddieW) channel — “Video Game High School” has the added wrinkle that it will be the first scripted, narrative series to be promoted by YouTube in the way traditional networks (and Netflix) promote TV shows.

And, make no mistake, “Video Game High School” is a TV show. The second season consisted of six, 30-minute episodes.

Created by Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold, the show takes place in an alternate universe where video-gaming is the world’s biggest spectator sport, and gamers are treated like star athletes. Produced by Rocket Jump Studios in partnership with Collective Digital Studio, the series has totaled more than 84 million views across both seasons.

It will certainly be interesting to see if and/or how much YouTube’s campaign helps the show in terms of season three viewership.

Like the first two seasons, season three was also financed, in part, by a large crowdfunding campaign. Wong and the team raised nearly $900,000 on Indiegogo, almost $100,000 more than the amount they raised on Kickstarter for season two.

Per the WSJ report, ads for “Video Game High School” will kick-off next month. The third season is set to debut on October 13.

Facebook’s Latest Video Features Look A Lot Like YouTube

By Jessica Klein

If you’ve doubted Facebook’s stance as a possible YouTube competitor, the latest video features on the social network may just change your mind.

First of all, more people are watching, posting, and sharing videos on Facebook. From May to the end of July 2014 alone, video views increased by over 50 percent, with an average of over 1 billion views taking place on the social network each day in the month of June.

Beginning this week, Facebook users (i.e. most everyone) will have the YouTube-like benefit of seeing how many times people have viewed a video. This will help spotlight trending videos, as well as bring on the attitude that more than just “friends” are going to watch any given video post.

Furthermore, Facebook tested a “related videos” feature back in July on mobile devices. Also like YouTube, the feature brings viewers from the end of one video to a group of suggested videos, encouraging longer overall watch time on the platform. The social network has also been toying with auto-play, so as users scroll through their news feeds, the videos they pass will begin playing before they press play.

Calls to action are also making Facebook more like YouTube. Annotations inviting viewers to visit a general website, another video, or a product site will help video publishers on Facebook gain more audience engagement. Metrics will also help such publishers determine the success of their videos on the platform.

The new features all lean towards making Facebook more of an entertainment experience than a social one. The company’s acquisition of LiveRail earlier this summer, a video advertising tech company, also shows a commitment towards a more commercial, video-centric approach to social media.

As Fidji Simo, Facebook’s project management director of video, explains, “The goal of News Feed is to deliver the right stories to the right people at the right time.” This statement backs up Facebook as an entertainment/news platform rather than a social site, which perhaps it’s moving further away from with every new YouTube-esque aspect.

Kahlua’s Short White Russian Film

When it comes to what made the White Russian drink famous, there’s no doubt that “The Dude” abides. That’s the character Jeff Bridges made famous in the 90’s film The Big Lebowski, portraying a bowler who enjoys slugging down the drinks when he’s not embroiled in the midst of a kidnapping plot.

To help celebrate the legacy of the drink, Bridges has teamed up with Award-winning director Ivan Zacharias for a new short sponsored by Kahlua called The White Russian, which can be viewed below.

https://vimeo.com/105121278

In the four-minute clip, which has ties to Kahlua’s ability to make a solid version of the drink, Bridges tells an interesting story to a bartender, explaining how, as a younger man, he came upon a prime opportunity to find a treasure buried within the desert. Of course, the trek to find said treasure isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, as trouble comes in tow, in the form of a couple of rivals in cars. And then, out of nowhere, a Cosmonaut decides to make an appearance.

The piece manages to work not only in Kahlua’s favor, but also Bridges’, as many fans consider his performance in The Big Lebowski to be one of the most iconic. “The Dude” has been a popular character for years, appearing in t-shirts and posters, as well as being the subject of the Lebowskifest, a yearly festival that brings together fans of the film. (Bridges has attended on more than one occasion, even performing with his band one year.)

Meanwhile, Kahlua benefits with a sly nod to its White Russian model, while also producing a fun little web film that pays tribute to niche cinema without going overboard – definitely an unlikely approach to marketing.

Now if we could only get more films with “The Dude.”

Reddit Introduces New AMA Mobile App

One of Reddit’s most popular features is its crowdsourced question-and-answer forum known as “Ask Me Anything” or “AMA.” And now, according to TubeFilter, after much anticipation, Reddit is bringing these popular AMA interviews to the mobile app category.

Variety says the AMA app is already available on iOS and is scheduled to be released on Android later this week. The app is aimed to make AMAs a lot snazzier with an elegant design that allows users to keep up with discussion threads in real time, unlike the traditional, lackluster desktop version.

The app is designed users who browse Reddit on their phones while also appealing to new users. “We want to make it easier for new users to join Reddit and experience all the awesome content,” said Reddit’s SVP of mobile, Ellen Pao. “That’s part of the overall goal of becoming a more mature company.”
