If Sterling Cooper Went Social

In the spirit of the return of AMC’s hit show Mad Men, social media marketer and blogger Jason Keath gathered advertising pundits to envision what the fictional 1960’s ad agency Sterling Cooper would look like today.

In the AMC series, the characters started in radio and print ads.  As the show progressed, television came on the scene.  Now we’re getting a view into what the men and women of Mad Men might be doing today in the internet and social media influenced “always-on” ad world.

London-based marketer Ron Schott looked at what life at Sterling Cooper would embody once the agency went digital. Looking at the show’s protagonist, Schott writes, “Don Draper would always be giving speeches in the office about how ‘viral’ doesn’t just happen, ‘we’ make it happen.”

He also imagines how the pretentious and flamboyant character of Salvatore “Sal” Romano would take advantage of Oreo’s agile digital strategy that made a big splash during the Super Bowl.

“Sal would come back and run the real-time content department, pumping out Oreo-esque images like a machine,” writes Schott.

In a play on Instagram, Schott asks what the show’s secretary and femme fatale Joan Holloway would have to deal with on the photo-sharing platform.

“Joan would get 2,345 follower requests on Instagram a day because her profile picture is just a tad risqué,” he muses.

Marketing pundit Jesse Noyes chose to jest about the constant alcohol consumption on the show, guessing that the characters today “would drink Red Bull instead of whiskey.”

Another marketer, Joe Chernov, pokes fun at our generation’s love affair with technology and the Internet saying.

“The show would immediately become unwatchable and boring because everyone would be staring at their monitors and smartphones instead of talking to each other,” writes Chernov.

Digital and social media marketer Ryan Cohn paired a YouTube video with his quip. It features Don Draper explaining the value and majesty of nostalgia in advertising, and getting hung up on Facebook hype.

Cohn writes, “And, of course, Don would pitch Facebook on this totally new concept that would redefine the social network once and for all, Timeline.”

More Reasons For Women And #1ReasonWhy

By Elena Zanone

It was only a mere six months ago when the game industry took to Twitter with #1ReasonWhy to voice concerns and share stories about perceptions of women in games.  Based on a couple of incidents at recent industry shows PAX East and Game Developers Conference (GDC), this hashtag isn’t going away any time soon.

The most recent high profile incident happened last week at GDC.  After a party sponsored by IGDA special interest group Women in Games featured scantily clad female dancers, one of the group’s most high profile board members Brenda Brathwaite resigned.  It didn’t help that the party was held hours after Brathwaite was on the women’s issues GDC panel 1ReasonToBe, a discussion meant to continue the dialogue started by the #1ReasonWhy Twitter thread.

After claiming she was bombarded with messages about the IGDA party, Brathwaite took to Twitter and also issued this statement to announce her resignation from the body: “I have been a long-time supporter of the IGDA. However, my silence would have been complicity. I had no choice. And just hours after our panel, too.”

During the panel, Brathwaite had singled out how uncomfortable booth models made her, how they created a sexually charged atmosphere at an event, and that it was an affront to the women of the games industry.  There seems to be a trend, and it’s not just Brathwaite who’s apparently uneasy about it.  The week before GDC at PAX East, Crystal Dymanics’ community manager Meaghan Marie had an experience where a reporter turned an interview of Tomb Raider cosplay models into a sexual Q&A.  She filed a complaint and managed to get the reporter banned from all PAX events, and the incident moved her to detail her personal anecdotes with sexism in the industry in a Tumblr post, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”

The string of these recent incidents started with last year’s Eurogamer Expo in October, where YouTube personality KSIOlaJidebt decided to take what he thought would be a fun approach to reporting on the event with a man-on-the-street style video.  Whatever comedic talents he has, they were misguidedly focused on one shtick — harassing women at the show.  His act went beyond distasteful jokes and verbal innuendos to moments one might classify as physical harassment if not for his subjects being good natured for the camera.  The video prompted an outcry on Twitter, with people eventually direct tweeting event organizers.  Ultimately Eurogamer editor-in-chief Tom Bramwell stepped in and announced that KSIOlaJidebt would be banned from all future Eurogamer events.

That ugliness simmered for less than a month before another incident at New York Comic Con.  Fashion designer and cosplay model Mandy Caruso was subjected to a distasteful press interview which she was forced to cut short. Caruso took to Tumblr to detail her rough encounter, which has now been shared by more than 47,000 followers and supporters.

Since the most recent events at GDC, Brathwaite has received massive support from her Twitter followers and women and men from all corners of the game industry.  One fellow IGDA board member, Darius Kazemi, supported Brathwaite by tendering his own resignation from the IGDA, an act that other members have followed.

The IGDA has since apologized for what transpired at its event, issuing this statement: “We recognize that some of the performers’ costumes at the party were inappropriate, and also some of the activities they performed were not what we expected or approved. We regret that the IGDA was involved in this situation. We do not condone activities that objectify or demean women or any other group of people. One of the core values of the IGDA is encouraging inclusion and diversity. Obviously we need to be more vigilant in our efforts. We intend to be so in the future.”

The company kicked off its new AXE Apollo Space Academy, an online contest that promises to send 22 winners to the edge of space and back aboard a private spaceship. The winning space travelers will launch aboard a suborbital Lynx space plane built by the U.S. company XCOR Aerospace and operated by the tourism firm Space Expedition Curacao.

The contest is open to men and women in more than 60 countries who sign up on the AXE Apollo Space Academy website (AXEApollo.com) and write about why they should be chosen to fly in space, while others will vote on the entries.

Winning space travelers will fly, one at a time, aboard Lynx space planes once Space Expedition Curacao begins operational flights. The reusable space planes are designed to fly two people — one pilot and a passenger — to an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers) during suborbital flights. The rocket plane is built to take off and land horizontally on a runway.

The Return Of Mike And Ike

For the last year, boxes of Mike and Ike have appeared in stores with either “Mike” or “Ike” scribbled over.  The 72-year-old candy item hoped to create social media buzz and foster resonance among teens, so the packaging reflected a narrative the brand put out in the blogosphere that involved Mike and Ike being fictional business partners who had gone their separate ways for creative reasons.

A new integrated campaign has recently launched and the two characters have decided to work together again after almost tripling their Facebook fans to just under one million.

Note: despite some reports the male characters’ storyline wasn’t meant to suggest a romantic relationship. Ike explored hip-hop, and Mike dove into his art projects, as the narrative goes.  Check out their Tumblr to find out more.

Marriage Equality Supporters Paint Facebook Red

Facebook is seeing another political movement rally backers on the social net by having supporters change their profile pictures. If you’ve been seeing profile pictures replaced with a distinctive red image, it’s the work of Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the gay and lesbian advocacy group and opponent of the Defense of Marriage Act.

HRC isn’t the first to take advantage of Facebook this way. Last year when the internet rallied against the controversial, corporation-backed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), activists on Facebook turned their profile pictures black to signify how the laws would amount to a clampdown on information flow over the internet. More recently, Rhythm and Hues inspired a unionization movement among visual effects artists when it announced layoffs right around the time it was taking home an Oscar for its work on the film Life of Pi.  The movement took to Facebook, asking supporters to replace their profile pictures with ‘green screens’ to symbolize what a film might look like without the work of visual effects artists.

HRC’s image was originally shared by the group earlier this week and as of the time of this writing has generated more than 68,000 shares and 21,000 Likes.  It has also transcended Facebook to other social nets, namely Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest. HRC introduced the image when it put it in place of its own blue and yellow logo. Advocates have not only begun using it for their profile pictures but also putting creative spins on their own images. Images circulating the internet are incorporating the graphic’s distinctive red, representing HRC’s message red4equality, and the widely recognized gay and lesbian movement’s ‘equal sign’ logo into everything from Beatles inspired images to Star Wars themes and pictures of kittens.
