StarCraft II Moves 1.5 Million In First Two Days

Blizzard Entertainment has revealed that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty sold over one million copies in its first 24 hours of availability worldwide. Also, it sold 1.5 million copies in its first 48 hours, making it the fastest-selling strategy game of all time.

“We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on five different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead.”

Blizzard released the game simultaneously in North America, Europe, South Korea, Russia, and regions of Asia Pacific and South America on July 27. Over 8,000 stores opened at midnight to celebrate the event.

“GameStop had more than 3,000 stores open at midnight, so our StarCraft players got a jump start on playing the epic experience Blizzard consistently delivers with its games,” said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop. “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is officially GameStop’s fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008.”

EMA Report: Physical Media Still Dominates Digital

The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) released their D2 Report: Discs & Digital The Business of Home Entertainment Retailing. They indicate that physical media is still the primary choice for consumers of home entertainment, with DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales totaling $17.9 billion in sales for 2009 (nine times the revenue generated by digital distribution channels).

“While there has been a great deal of focus recently on the slippage of revenues in the DVD market, the untold story is that consumers embrace of home entertainment remains very strong and packaged media is the preferred delivery instrument,” noted Bo Andersen, President and CEO of EMA. “Digital distribution is clearly an important segment of the home entertainment market and will continue to grow in market share in the coming year. While it is tempting for industry outsiders to say disc is dead, as the saying goes, reports of its demise are grossly exaggerated.”

The D2 Report also says that consumer transactions for pre-recorded content grew by 2.8 percent in 2009. Also, 80 percent to 90 percent of paid video game software acquisitions were on physical media.

Kevin Butler Gets New Zealand Rewards

Recently, an ad for TV3 in New Zealand released which blatantly ripped off an SCEA spot starring Kevin Butler. The VP of whatever-is-convenient issued a cheeky response requesting support in making the PS3 the official console of New Zealand and a box set of Flight of The Conchords.

As it turns out, TV3 fulfilled this agreement and more, with various other items from New Zealand included in the package:

It even has Marmite…

Guitar Hero Gets Soundgarden CD

Soundgarden will be debuting its first album in 13 years via Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Telephantasm: A Retrospective will be available packaged with the game one week before it releases to retail.

“There are a lot of different ways to get your music out (and) … this clearly to me is one way to do that,” says Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell. “Guitar Hero has actually turned on a lot of young music fans to music that they otherwise might not have ever heard.”

“Telephantasm” will feature Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, as well as a previously unreleased song Black Rain. The latter song will be playable on the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock game disc, while the rest will be available for download.

Guitar Hero chief operating officer David Haddad says “Telephantasm”‘s immediate availability as downloadable game content, “is a recognition from the music industry that we are a platform for digital distribution.”

Insomniac Announcing PS3 Title At PAX 2010

While it’s known that Insomniac is working on a multiplatform game for Electronic Arts, the developer indicated it would still work on PS3 exclusive projects. Sure enough, the company has announced that they will unveil their next PS3 title at PAX 2010.

“We’re bringing our new game to a very special Penny Arcade Expo panel on Saturday evening (September 4), at 6:30 p.m. in the Serpent Theatre,” wrote Insomniac in a newsletter. “G4TV’s Adam Sessler will moderate a panel with key creative talent from Insomniac Games as we discuss (and demo!) our upcoming PlayStation 3 project.”

It surprised many that Resistance 3 was not shown off at E3 2010, considering a billboard for the game was seen on the set of Battle: Los Angeles. Given the timing, it seems highly likely that Resistance 3 will be the title that Insomniac will announce.

Social Networks Dominating Time Online

According to Nielsen, social networking now takes up more time than any other online activity. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter take up 22.7 percent of time spent on the web, up over 40 percent from last year.

Online games were the second highest rated activity for time, taking up 10.2 percent of time online. E-mail fell from 11.5 percent of time online to 8.3 percent from June 2009 to June 2010, but it’s gone up on mobile phones, from 37.4 percent to 41.6 percent, perhaps an indication of greater smartphone use.
