BioWare Deflects Early Concerns Over Star Wars: The Old Republic

Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz recently complained that Star Wars: The Old Republic was derisive of World of Warcraft with the typical BioWare dialog trees added for NPC interaction. While not specifically addressing the WoW clone remark, BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk see progress with the game

“Things are tracking well,” said CEO Ray Muzyka. “We’re progressing well. The fact we’re showing it hands-on on the show floor is an indication of our confidence in the quality. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback on that. We know how critical it is to launch as a solid game and then have really high quality service afterwards, too. We have plans to do follow-on content and things that’ll keep our players engaged and active for years to come.”

“The content’s getting there,” added BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk. “We’re pretty happy with what we’re showing. There’s always a lot of refining and polishing. We’ve pretty well announced the whole range of features. There’s such an incredibly large range of things, like crafting, heroic combat, PVP, war zones, end game content what we call operations, which are basically raids, companion characters, there’s all this stuff. All those things all together are looking good. It’s not just enough to make the game great. You have to give great service and you have to be able to support the game on a long-term basis. So we’ve devoted a lot of effort and thinking towards how we do that. The beta testing really is a validation of that stuff. At some point we’ll be ready to go.”

Sony Brand Emerges From PSN Downtime Relatively Unscathed

Recently, Sony endured an attack on their PSN network and saw data from 75 million accounts. While this, and subsequent attacks on various Sony sites from around the world, might look like something that results in brand damage, several analysts don’t see it quite so dire.

“There’s definitely chatter about the hackings, but it’s not huge,” said Lisa Joy Rosner, chief marketing officer at NetBase. “It’s not devastating.”

Several other companies, like Google, Epsilon Data Management and Lockheed Martin have also suffered hacking attempts. “The reality is companies are under attack,” said Andrew Szabo, founder and principal of Marketing Symphony. “If Sony had been the only one hacked into, the impact on the brand would have been much greater. Unfortunately, they’re in good company.”

“I would expect in the short term that trust perceptions could erode and sales might suffer,” said Ann Green, a partner in the client solutions group at Millward Brown. “Overall, it’s a very strong brand, but other gaming consoles such as Wii and Xbox 360 are well placed as trusted brands. It will be key for Sony to manage their communication well, clearly establishing and addressing the facts in order to regain strength.”

While some people criticized Sony for being slow to reveal the nature of the attack, others believe their taking of responsibility have been laudable and their attempts with a ‘Welcome Back’ program have been successful. “Hate the people who hacked the PlayStation network and got it shut down for over a month, but because of them I got two free games so I’m pretty happy,” wrote a Facebook user.

The problem going forward is preventing this sort of attack in the future. “They have a lot of properties to protect,” said Steve Orrin, director of security solutions at Intel Corp. “They’re trying to prevent all possible attacks, but the attackers only need to find one hole.”

Zumba Fitness Getting New Ad Push

505 Games and Nintendo have agreed to a new set of marketing for Zumba Fitness. The TV ads should be airing now for the game that has led the Wii charts in the U.K. for nine straight weeks.

“Zumba Fitness has been a massive success on Wii and we are happy to be working in collaboration with both 505 Games and Zumba to create this energetic and large-scale marketing campaign,” said Nintendo’s marketing manager Robert Lowe. “It fits superbly with our female Wii audience, and the TV ad will show how Zumba fans can experience this amazing fitness phenomenon in their own living room.”

Zumba has been one of the sales success stories of the year to date and has surpassed all expectations, added 505 s marketing director Alison Mitchell. The TV campaign further cements the opportunity for greater brand success, taking it to a wider audience and ensuring that it continues to sell throughout the summer and the peak season.

Dragon Age II: Fans ‘Not Pleased’ Says Gibeau

Dragon Age II received a mixed reception, something that designer David Gaider admits they’ll have to do better on in the future. It’s clear that complaints have resonated all the way to the top, with EA Games label boss Frank Gibeau confirming those issues in a recent interview.

“We were clearly disappointed with some of the response from the fanbase, because we want them to be as excited about it as we are,” said Gibeau. “We’re very proud of the game. We tried to innovate and do some different things with the combat system and some of the way we told story. For some fans it worked well. In fact, we brought a lot of new fans into the Dragon Age franchise.”

“But to be honest, we lost some fans as well. They were not pleased with some of the innovations and things we’d done. We understand that and we’re listening,” he added. “As we think about where we take the franchise next, we’re going to take that into consideration and really engage them. Ray [Muzyka] and Greg [Zeschuk] have built a long career being close to their fanbase and understanding what they want. If they do something in a direction that is innovative and fresh for some but not for others, they’ll take that into consideration as we think about the next design and where the game goes from here.”

Suda51 Hints At Another No More Heroes

Earlier this year, Suda51 indicated that he wanted to make a third No More Heroes game. Speaking in a recent interview, he said that he had some thoughts on the matter and seemed heavily tilted towards the Wii U.

“Of course, yeah,” said Suda, when reminded about his earlier comments about No More Heroes 3. “I promise to not break your heart.”

“However, I was at the Nintendo booth yesterday and today, and I actually had a chance to take the Wii U into my own hands. And as soon as I grabbed it things started swirling in my head, he said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be one male character. It seems like maybe there’s a possibility that I may come up with some ideas. I’ll leave it at that for now. We’ll see what happens. Of course I can’t reveal who that guy is in my head.”

EA Sticking With Tiger Woods As Golf Brand

After Tiger Woods tarnished his image via his infidelities, Electronic Arts stuck with him, but he hasn’t won a tournament since and has slipped to number 15 in the PGA rankings. Still, EA indicates they will stick with him for now.

“As a company we’ve had a great relationship with him,” said EA Sports’ senior vice president of worldwide development Andrew Wilson. “We continue to be supportive of him. He continues to be the namesake and on the packaging of our games.”

“What I believe, though, has happened in the marketplace around Tiger Woods, the same as it has around Madden and FIFA, is the name has as much, if not more, relationship to the quality of the experience people play than it does the person or the organization the name originated form, he elaborated. “FIFA today for many people is a game, not an organization or governing body. Madden today for many people is a game, not a coach commentator from American Football. Tiger Woods today is the greatest golf game on the market. That will continue to be the case regardless of what happens with Tiger in his personal life.”

Facebook Loses U.S. Users, Still Approaching 700 Million Worldwide

According to tracking, Facebook is at 687 million users and well on its way to reaching 700 million. However, the social networking site recently saw weaker gains during the past two months, an unusual trend.

“Why the drop? Most prominently, the United States lost nearly 6 million users, falling from 155.2 million at the start of May to 149.4 million at the end of it,” wrote Eric Eldon. “This is the first time the country has lost users in the past year. Canada also fell significantly, by 1.52 million down to 16.6 million, although it has been fluctuating around that number for the past year. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom, Norway and Russia all posted losses of more than 100,000. If these countries most of whom had adopted Facebook many years ago had not lost users, and instead posted even small gains, Facebook would have had a much more typical month.”

“Ultimately, these numbers might just be a short-term glitch. Trends over time will prove out whether this was just a temporary reflection of things like college graduations and the like.”

“Still, by the time Facebook reaches around 50 percent of the total population in a given country (plus or minus, depending on internet access rates in that country), growth generally slows to a halt, as we’ve noted before,” notes Eldon. “So far, Facebook has been able to make up stalls and losses with big gains in heavily-populated developing countries like Mexico, Brazil, India and Indonesia. As you can see in the table above of the ten countries that gained the most users over May, this continues to be the case. But how much further can it go if it is to reach its goal of 1 billion monthly active users At least without getting into China a move that as we and many others have noted, could both give it access to hundreds of millions of users and compromise its reputation in the U.S. and many other countries around the world.”

Call Of Duty Elite Sees Two Million Recruits

While there’s been some complaining about Call of Duty Elite from certain members of the hardcore gaming community, it hasn’t apparently dulled the enthusiasm most people have for the service. Activision’s social specialist Dan Amrich has announced that 2 million gamers are looking to get into the beta for the subscription service.

“I just got the number back, and it blew my mind. More than two million gamers have signed up at callofduty.com/elite {link no longer active} so far and they hit that number in less than two weeks,” said Amrich. That should give the dev team at Beachhead plenty to work with to kick off the beta, which officially starts July 14.”

“The official start of the beta is a month away, so there s still plenty of time for you to sign up. When the studio head at Beachhead said this would be a live beta {link no longer active},  he was not kidding your participation really can make a difference in how Elite evolves,” added Amrich. “And don’t be discouraged by the big number, thinking you shouldn’t bother because they already have enough people two million volunteers among 30 million Call of Duty players is a small amount. More would be even better. Once you’ve signed up, just watch your email inbox for an invite.”
