Twitter Gets New Look

You may have already seen a new look for your Twitter page and if you haven’t yet, you’ll be getting it rolled out within the next few weeks according to Twitter.

Get those large landscape cover photos ready because Twitter is about to supersize it with profile photos also getting special treatment. Have a few witticisms you want to highlight? Twitter is now giving you the ability to pin tweets you’d like to showcase to the very top of your profile. The pinning function is very brand-focused, allowing marketers to put their best foot forward and promote more effectively.

Twitter’s redesign comes after concerns about user growth on the platform earlier this year. This move hopes to make new Twitter users feel at ease and make those who don’t use Twitter on a regular basis find it more appealing as a visual experience.

You can see the full redesign on the TODAY Show’s Twitter account here.

Sony Teams Up With Top Rank Boxing

Sony is taking its outreach beyond the digital world with its latest deal, as it hopes its logo will make an impact in the boxing one.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America has partnered with Top Rank Boxing, one of the biggest promotional sports companies in the world. Through the deal, the PlayStation brand, along with ads for the PlayStation 4 console, will appear in many circles of the boxing promotion. These include clothing, arena locations, and TV spots, among other appearances.

The first event that will make use of this new deal is the forthcoming April 12 bout between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley.

This is the latest marketing move on Sony’s part, as it recently put millions of dollars into a new ad campaign featuring such titles as Destiny and Watch Dogs, both of which will have exclusive content on PlayStation consoles.

Nielsen Will Measure Mobile Devices

Nielsen may have found a way to incorporate mobile viewing into measuring its ratings on television programs.

The company’s new software, Syncbak, enables it to be used with its applications, allowing broadcasters the opportunity to measure local TV viewing through smartphones and tablets, rather than just televisions. The mobile audiences from these devices will begin to be counted sometime later this year, as part of a program’s overall ratings.

Since audiences have begun transitioning from regular televisions to mobile devices to watch their favorite programs, Nielsen has been trying to find a way to measure their viewership, while still keeping tabs on the old medium. Syncbak will certainly enable it to do so.

See ‘Game of Thrones’ Premiere On Xbox

HBO is looking to sign up more subscribers, and has decided to let all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners watch the premiere episode of Game of Thrones Season Four for free, at least until April 14. The episode is already on track to become the most-pirated TV episode ever, and HBO is going to help spread the fun.

According to Variety, HBO said the sampling deal with Microsoft had been in the works for some time and wasn’t in response to the piracy of the episode.

Separately, HBO has also posted the entire first episode of Mike Judge’s new comedy Silicon Valley to YouTube, where it will be available for free until April 28.

Xbox One Gets Performance Boost

Microsoft wants players to get the most out of its Xbox One console, and today it introduced a fresh new update that should make a difference when it comes to improving its overall performance.

The new software pack, dubbed DirectX 12, will enable the Xbox One to double the graphics performance it’s currently been capable of offering – which should make all the difference when it comes to games. One notable feature is the ability to play games in full 1080p, rather than the default 720p.

“The results are spectacular. Not just in theory but in practice (full disclosure: I am involved with the Star Swarm demo which makes use of this kind of technology),” said Stardock founder and CEO Brad Wardell about the technology. “While each generation of video card struggles to gain substantial performance over the previous generation, here, the same hardware will suddenly see a doubling of performance.

“Xbox One is the biggest beneficiary; it effectively gives every Xbox One owner a new GPU that is twice as fast as the old one,” he added.

The update should be available now, and is free of charge.

Nvidia’s Shield Adds Features

Nvidia is ready to unleash the true potential of its Shield handheld device by adding a few noteworthy features.

First up, gamers will now be able to stream their sessions from their PC to the Shield, even if they’re on the go, using the just-added Gamestream service. The games need to be purchased beforehand and part of the gamer’s PC library, and, from there, they can be streamed rather easily, provided the user has access to a strong-enough Wi-Fi signal.

“In eight short months, Nvidia Shield has come on leaps and bounds, gaining over half a dozen game-changing, innovative, revolutionary features that cannot be found elsewhere,” said Nvidia tech evangelist Andrew Burnes. “Furthermore, existing features and support have been radically enhanced, and all around extra care and attention has been lavished upon Shield’s software.”

The other updates include support for Bluetooth peripherals (including mice and keyboards), as well as an updated TegraZone app portal.

The update should be available shortly, and will be free of charge.

Affordable 3D Printer Hits Kickstarter Goal

It’s funny what can happen with a popular Kickstarter campaign in just 11 minutes’ time. That’s how long it took for the new Micro printer to reach its $50,000 goal, and by this point, it’s managed to fly over the $1.3 million dollar mark – setting a new record for the crowdfunding site.

The Micro, a project by M3D LLC, is a new consumer-ready 3D printer that won’t run someone an arm and a leg in price – the final unit is set to sell for around $299, which isn’t too bad considering the technology.

“It is the most affordable 3D printer that can be used right out of the box,” reads the Kickstarter page. “Perfect for beginners and experts alike, just plug in the printer, download or create models, hit print, and watch your custom creations form right before your eyes.”

The campaign still has 28 days left, so those who are interested in getting a unit and other goodies can head over to the Kickstarter page and donate.

The Micro is expected to launch this July, if production goes according to plan.

Microsoft’s Xbox One Marketing Battle

The results of the first few months of next-gen consoles are in, and the PlayStation 4 has a sales lead over the Xbox One, at least going in to March. Somewhere over 6 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold, while the Xbox One is somewhere over 4 million (at least, prior to to the launch of Titanfall). This was not a surprise to many observers given the $100 price difference between the two consoles, but this was not good enough for Microsoft.

New Xbox head Phil Spencer underscored the importance of the Xbox One to Microsoft in a recent interview. “I go back and I look at Apple and they, on the back of music, became a very relevant consumer brand. Their investment in music early with the iPod and iTunes and everything that they did was an incredible growth opportunity for them and they really sparked consumer delight and innovation in the product, both the industrial design and just the way the whole service worked and I think we’ve got the same opportunity with Xbox here at Microsoft.”

“I think we have that opportunity. I don’t think it’s a lay-up; and I think there’s a lot of work. A lot of things that have to be done, but it would be great to be a part of that. If people look back and said ‘this is when Microsoft committed to gaming across everything that we did led with what we do on Xbox One and that was an important part in their history,'” Spencer added.

How has Microsoft been working to this end, and how has it responded to the sales differential with the PS4 On a number of fronts, but the most important is pricing. Certainly Microsoft wants to avoid a permanent, obvious cut in the Xbox One price, and that’s understandable. If you can boost sales to the desired point without a price cut, your bottom line will thank you. Perhaps the sales picture will look better with a few key releases and some marketing, so don’t give up margin in case you don’t really have to for the long term.

Cue the bundled software promotion, which adds significant value to the Xbox One by bundling in a digital copy of Titanfall or Forza Motorsport 5 for free. That’s a $60 game, effectively reducing the price of the Xbox One by $60, making up more than half of the price gap with the PS4. Best of all, that promotion can be ended at any time, returning the Xbox One to its original margins.

That promotion (which is still going on, with no particular end announced) was good, but Microsoft wasn’t finished there. Major retailers Best Buy and Walmart have the Xbox One at $449 with the bundled game, which effectively makes the Xbox One even cheaper than the PS4. At Costco, the Xbox One bundle with Forza Motorsport 5 is also at $449. Those are promotions offered by the retailer, not Microsoft, yet Microsoft is certainly watching the results carefully.

Microsoft isn’t relying on pricing and promotions to boost the Xbox One. We’ve seen a number of stories coming out of Microsoft’s Build conference, where the Xbox One featured prominently. One of the criticisms leveled against the Xbox One has been that it doesn’t have quite the same graphics horsepower as the PS4, so Microsoft is working to overcome that. At the Build conference Microsoft showed off the benefits of cloud computing for improving Xbox One game performacne, and trumpeted the introduction of DX12 that could significantly boost the Xbox One’s graphics power. In other words, Microsoft is not conceding this point at all to Sony.

The Xbox One is more than just games, though Microsoft is careful to keep the focus on gaming front and center (after the negative response to the initial unveiling that was focused on the console’s media capabilities). The recent announcement of a full slate of original programming for the Xbox One shows Microsoft’s desire to make the Xbox One a significant media machine. It’s important to notice that Microsoft is planning for each show to have interactive features to take advantage of the Xbox One and to differentiate this programming from other shows.

Microsoft continues to provide system updates and tweaks on a faster pace than Sony, bringing new functionality (like YouTube uploads) to the Xbox One and hinting at future capabilities. This is leading up to E3, where Microsoft will be attempting to reset market perceptions and recapture the leading position in the console wars. It’s an ambitious goal, especially when Sony won’t be standing still either. Still, Microsoft has the advantage of greater financial resources, and if the company really is determined they can easily outspend Sony on marketing or anything else.

Microsoft knows it’s under pressure from multiple fronts, on the low end from Amazon Fire TV and the rumored Android TV and revised Apple TV as well as Sony at the high end. Microsoft has staked out a claim on the premium end of the living room market, and it looks like the company is striving to be the leader. Only one thing’s for sure right now: E3 is going to be interesting.
