Microsoft Shows ‘Universal Windows’

During its Build 2014 conference this week, Microsoft decided to open the door for developers with a new program revolving around “universal Windows Apps,” which allows them to build applications for phones, tablets, Windows Pcs and even the Xbox One.

“Google and Apple, they have a different approach – they want you to create one app for phones and tablets and a different app for phones and laptop,” said David Treadwell, corporate vice president for Microsoft’s operating systems group. The company has “streamlined every phase of the development cycle,” according to him, with better ways to make applications and debug them on the fly.

A number of languages will be supportsed, including C++, HTML, JavaScript and others. Microsoft wants the applications to be broadly useful. “What we are going to enable is your universal Windows applications running on the Xbox,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft’s operating systems groups.

The new feature is expected to play a huge role with the company’s Visual Studio set-up, as it will be possible to take an existing app into Visual Studio and transform it into a universal app. The Windows store will also be simplified, allowing you to be an app once and use it across multiple devices.

Ready to take your augmented gaming experience to the next level 13th Lab is here to help.

They can move around their home, office or anywhere while playing first-person shooting games. The developers are calling it “Reality Gaming,” namely because of how it uses real-world locales for gaming action.

13th Lab recently kicked off a Kickstarter campaign to get funding on the project, in which it aims to get $150,000 by April 17th. If the goal is met, the device is set to ship sometime later this year.

Real-Time Marketing Expands Beyond Social

Real-time marketing has changed quite a bit with the increasing importance of social media.

A new report from Evergage indicates that approximately three-quarters of marketing professionals worldwide defined real-time marketing as personalizing content in response to consumer interactions. This follows the news that eight in 10 marketers saw an increase in customer engagement as a benefit to RTM, thanks to personalized – and targeted – interactions.

Social media continues to be at the top of used channels by 48 percent, while websites and emails are closely behind at 45 and 39 percent apiece. Other tactics, like call center, online display and search, remain in the hunt around 20 percent apiece.

More than one-third of these marketers worldwide believe that RTM is extremely important to their organizations, though another study from Adobe shows different results, with U.S. marketers believing that RTM isn’t such a top-priority, with only 14 percent of those polled citing its importance.

It’ll be interesting to see how far RTM grows over the coming year.

Amazon Adds Metacritic Scores To Listings

In an attempt to point out the more popular titles that it’s selling on its site, Amazon has added a new component to the video game listings on its site – scores from the aggregation site Metacritic.

The score is displayed below and to the right of the game’s box art graphic, giving users an idea of what journalists think about the title. Although a general score is given in most cases, not all versions of the game are reflected in the score. For instance, if a score is posted for a title released on Xbox 360, it may have reflected from a PlayStation 3 version of the game.

This feature has gone live in Amazon’s video game marketplace, so interested customers can see how new releases and older favorites rank.

The Data On eSports’ Rapid Rise

It’s no secret that eSports has been growing rapidly in the last few years, propelled by free-to-play games like League of Legends and World of Tanks along with the spread of streaming game videos. Research firms Newzoo and SuperData have joined forces on a new free report, Sizing and Profiling eSports’ Popularity {link no longer active}, that provides some detailed numbers about the expansion of eSports.

The report features high-level findings from brand new research across multiple countries profiling 31.4 million eSports viewers and participants in the U.S., and another 16.3 million in key Western European territories.

“Long established in Asia, eSports and free-to-play have now broken out of their niche and into Western markets. Does this prove there is a direct relationship between the two phenomena At Newzoo, we believe so,” said Peter Warman, Newzoo CEO. “It is not surprising that free-to-play titles such as League of Legends, DOTA 2 and World of Tanks are currently leading the West in eSports. Time spent and engagement have become equally important KPIs as money spent, and that is essentially what eSports delivers.”

Newzoo Free Report: Sizing & Profiling eSports from Newzoo

The report showed that some 56 percent of U.S. gamers (and 50 percent of Western European gamers) are aware of eSports. That’s substantial, but there’s still room for significant growth. The size of the market is impress, with some 47.7 million people in th U.S. and Western Europe combined who either play or participate in eSports. It’s important to remember that leading Western eSports titles also have huge audiences elsewhere in the world, particularly in Asia, usually exceed the size of the Western audience.

While that 47.7 million number is large, the report notes that only 40 percent of eSports viewers are strongly engaged, either playing in amateur contests or watching regularly. That leaves the majority of eSports viewers to still be engaged at a deeper level, which explains the continuing investment of publishers like Riot Games in efforts to expand competitions and encourage more teams to form at different levels.

The eSports viewer is, not surprisingly, a pretty hard-core gamer according to the stats compiled by the report. Some 22 percent of them are big spenders, compared to 8 percent for all gamers. They are also havey console gamers, at least in the U.S., and are early adopters of next-gen consoles – 23 percent own an Xbox One compared to 7 percent of all console gamers. These eSports viewers are usually male (about 45 percent are males aged 21-35), and they’re more likely to be married (52 percent versus 39 percent for all gamers) and have a full-time job (71 percent versus 50 percent).

“Large companies like Riot Games, Valve, Wargaming and Ubisoft are placing bets on the growing success of eSports worldwide,” said SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen. “And with the booming popularity of streaming services like Twitch.tv and MLG.tv, it is becoming easier than ever for gamers to connect with other players and form communities that culminate in competitive gaming.”

Newzoo believes eSports growth will continue. “eSports has been extremely popular in Asia for a long time. Growth in that region will continue through organic growth of economy and connected population. The biggest change of which we have only witnessed the beginning, is in the West,” noted Warman. “As more game companies get involved in eSports on a professional level or by facilitating amateur leagues and championships, the involvement of Western gamers will continue to increase. The fact that the free-to-play model incentives and justifies the investment in eSports will only accelerate this as more titles move to a free-to-play or at least a business model that gives them continuous revenues, e.g. through add-on content or in-game spending.”

That means an expanding opportunity for publishers in eSports. “More time spent engaged with a game franchise will in the end translate into more money,” said Warman. “Our data shows that 60 percent of the 31.4 million Americans only watches eSports sometimes. The other 40 percent , or 13 million Americans, can already be considered eSports enthousiasts. The 60 percent represent the direct potential that will get more involved and ensure viewing time and participation will probably double in the coming year. The fact that companies like Twitch lower all thresholds to broadcast your game from your PC, console or mobile game will add to this.”

Warman predicts publishers will increase investment into eSports over the next year or two. “Wargaming invested $8 million in 2013 in their eSports effort. This year they expect to spend in excess of $10M,” Warman said. “The current players will up their investment and other companies are coming in. Activision is clearly accelerating their effort illustrated by the recent $1 million dollar Call of Duty Championship. I expect others, such as Ubisoft and EA to join. And let’s not forget about Valve and its DOTA 2. This year they will make a serious attempt to threaten League of Legends position as number 1 with DOTA 2. Publishers will also be able to recoup a growing share of their investment through sponsorships and media deals. ‘Innovative’ consumer brands such as RedBull, Coke, Intel, American Express, HBO as well as all hardware (peripheral) companies are already investing good money. More brands will follow.”

Amazon Fire TV Announced For $99

Amazon, as we predicted, launched its own entry into the console wars today with the Amazon Fire TV, a $99 Android-powered box that promises high-quality streaming, apps, and a major emphasis on gaming. The Amazon Fire TV features a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, which Amazon claims makes it three times faster than competing boxes from Roku and Apple. The box uses an Adreno 320 for graphics, and has dual-band Wi-Fi for fast streaming.

Amazon has also lined up many key partners, including Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, MLB.tv and the NBA. The company has also included a remote that makes it easy to do voice search, and it has a click wheel to make text entry easier. When you press play, content starts playing back immediately ith no waiting, a definite plus compared to other set-top boxes.

Gaming is obviously where Amazon has put a lot of effort, showing a version of Minecraft running on the Amazon Fire TV, and announcing publishers like EA, Disney, Sega, Ubisoft and TakeTwo will be contributing to the device. Amazon Game Studios unveiled Sev Zero, an exclusive third-person shooter for the Amazon Fire TV.

The Amazon Fire TV box is only 0.7″ high, and is available now for $99. The Fire Game Controller will sell for $40, though you can also play games with the remote included with the Amazon Fire TV. A version of the Amazon Fire TV bundled with the game controller will sell for $140. Amazon boasta games like Minecraft, The Walking Dead, Monsters University and Sev Zero are available now plus over a hundred titles to explore, with thousands more coming soon. Many are free, and Amazon says the average price of paid games is only $1.85.

This is a strong bid by Amazon to establish itself as a player in the family room. While the game lineup is thin to start, Amazon will be able to put millions of these boxes into homes as a streaming device. That in turn will be an attractive market for game developers. The Amazon Fire TV won’t be competition for high-end consoles, but it’s going to make the market tougher for low-end boxes from many companies. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony will have to take this into consideration if they plan on putting consoles into that $99 price range (PS Vita TV ), and Apple needs to get off the dime and move forward with a revised Apple TV as soon as they can.

Introducing Jay Baage

We have a new member on the [a]list team. Everyone—meet Joakim “Jay” Baage.

We’re very excited to have him apply his expertise and vision at a time when [a]list daily is seeing great growth. Jay will be overseeing day-to-day operations at [a]list in additon to programming and producing the [a]list summits, Ayzenberg Group’s invite-only industry event and working closely with [ion] Influencer Outreach Network.

He comes to us with over 20 years of experience in both media and marketing, previously having been President of Viking Digital Media and Vice President of Content and Business Development for Digital Media Wire. He is a seasoned journalist and a veteran of several positions at news organizations in Sweden.

We turned the tables on Jay and asked him a few questions for your entertainment below.

[a]list: What are you most excited for this year now you’re aboard [a]list?

Jay: This is a very exciting time to be in online editorial! The mobile revolution is giving users the ability to consume more content more frequently and engage with it better, which in turn is increasing the demand for even more editorial and paving the way for a new wave of branded content and native advertising.

It’s now up to both publishers and advertisers to get this right if content marketing is going to remain relevant and successful part of the marketing mix.

[a]list is providing real value for its audience by serving up quality editorial content with an entertainment marketer’s insider perspective on a daily basis on the digital and social media channels that matter.

I look forward to figure out how we can also provide that kind of value through new versions of our [a]list summits, as well as make sure that we also cover more about what is going on in the fast growing online video ecosystem.

[a]list: What do you consider to be the most important piece of news to affect the industry this past year?

Jay: Probably King’s Candy Crush Saga. Once the ugly ducking of the gaming industry, mobile game companies are now sizzling hot with revenues through the roof, proving that the medium is truly the message (even though many worry that some of these mobile game companies are one hit wonders as the King IPO proved).

[a]list: Attempt to describe yourself within the confines of Twitter’s 140 character limit.

Jay: I can do better than that. In spirit of providing value for our readers, I can give a music recommendation in less than 140 characters instead: #SELFIE by The Chainsmokers. With lyrics such as “What a fake model! She definently bought all her Instragram followers. WHO goes out on Mondays ” What is not to love for a content marketer

Optimus Prime Rolls Out For ‘Titanfall’

{video link no longer active}

IGN got the “exclusive” rights to this trailer announcing Optimus Prime for Titanfall and the only thing they could have done to make it more convincing was get Peter Cullen to do the Transfomer’s voice. Bonus points for the fine print at the end of the video and joking that it would feature a new Linkin Park song called Prime Time.
