Analysis: May’s Biggest Twitter Trends

Editor’s note: Robin Boytos is the director of analytics for Ayzenberg Insights. AListDaily is the editorial and publishing arm of the Ayzenberg Group, the parent company of Ayzenberg Insights.

At Ayzenberg Insights, I’m often tasked with understanding the conversations happening on social media. Twitter continues to be a platform where those conversations (within the parameters of 140 characters) tend to spread like wildfire.

We decided to take a look at trending Twitter hashtags and topics, in the US and globally, as they say a lot about the passions of the moment. We’re looking at the platform each month to see what we might glean from conversations, digging into post volume and length of trending.

What surfaces has some implication for brands about maximizing on the currents of conversations happening at any one time. Here’s our take on the trends for this month—stay tuned to see how these trends continue to evolve, and check out last month’s biggest trends to compare.

US Twitter Trends

Days of the week and TV shows with passionate communities regularly trend each week. Dancing With The Stars, Agents of Shield, Scandal, SDLive and Love and Hip Hop Atlanta made the top trending hashtags for another month.

A few TV shows made our list for the first time were all due to season or series finales. Titles that fell into this category: Empire, The Leftovers, Samurai Jack, The Flash and Eurovision.

While a few topics trended this month from a particular ignition point, many conversations in the US quickly shift to political or socioeconomic undertones, driving these topics into the Top 25. Joe Budden and Lil Yachty had a heated hip-hop feud over Lil Yachty’s controversial cover featuring diversity spanning race, gender and sexuality.  With a divided country on many of these topics, this sparked much conversation and in true Twitter form, turned into memes of Joe Budden. Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel shared his newborn child’s heart condition with the public, and this quickly turned to a conversation about healthcare in the US.

US Hashtag Spotlight

The hashtag of most interest to marketers in the US this month was #NationalEatWhatYouWantDay. Just like any other playful holiday, brands and celebrities find creative ways to tap into the conversation. Disney Pixar was able to capitalize on this trend with one of their most loved animated films, Up. Disney Pixar utilized a silly, playful GIF to participate in the holiday that resonated with their young-hearted audience.  This tweet received 443 retweets and 1,440 likes.

Other brands like Chipotle leveraged a simple text-only tweet to partake in the conversation. This was unique in that the language/tone of the tweet gave the brand some personality and authenticity, allowing them to get away with not needing a creative asset to attract their community. Their strategy was short and sweet, resulting in 729 retweets and 2,000 likes.

Global Twitter Trends

Similar to last month, days of the week trend regularly in multiple languages, however, this month futbol was not nearly as dominant. TV shows have encroached the global Top 25. Topics that fell in this category: Master Chef Brazil, Prison Break, Dancing Brazil, Master Chef Mexico, Vertigo, Koh Lanta, The Bachelorette, Dancing With The Stars US and Eurovision.

US politics have also made a global impact with the firing of FBI Director James Comey and President Trump and Ivanka Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

Global Hashtag Spotlight

Hashtag spotlights for global marketers this month include #loveislove and #StarWarsDay.

#loveislove was an impactful hashtag to unite the global communities on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The television show Shadow Hunters jumped in on the trend by utilizing a clip from their show which successfully drove 4,000 retweets and 8,300 likes as the message was true to the community.

Teen Vogue’s tweet boosted its engagements to 600 retweets and 1,000 likes. The brand took an extra step, in addition to the Pride flag gif, and created a thread with helpful articles on how to handle different scenarios that occur within the LGBT community in support of the event.

May 4, a widely known day as Star Wars day that unites fans from around the world to celebrate using #StarWarsDay and #MayThe4thBeWithYou. A few US football teams took to this trend by cleverly tying Star Wars to football.  The Texans posted this humorous gif receiving just shy of 4,000 engagements, while the Patriots related the trend back to their Superbowl wins receiving nearly 10,000 engagements on Twitter.

How Was Your #E32017? Twitter Feedback From The Floor

E3’s first year breaking away from a gaming industry-only audience was bound to stir those tied to tradition. As we’ve been going for years, we were wondering how our readers were affected by the change. This covers only a fraction of the 68,400 E3 2017 user segment, but we consider it handy for our ongoing conversations meant to understand marketers’ sentiment.

Naturally, we tackled news consumption first.

With info going directly to the game-loving public comes more amplification and noise. As far as announcement interactivity and volume, Brandwatch has declared Microsoft the company with the most social mentions this year.

Of course, the crowd conversation was unavoidable:

Marketers may have had the advantage of connecting with core gamers, but wall-to-wall attendees affected the usual business, meaning tricky show floor navigation, missed appointments and noise. This was a year to work out the foot-traffic kinks.

While the changing crowd disrupted physical movement, the notorious tech disruption making waves in so many other industries was not a theme this year. A majority of gaming companies left VR for the entertainment industry and stuck with tradition.

Once industry folks got a chance to cross the convention floor and take everything in, we gauged whether you were able to get your business done. It still feels pretty split. We’ll have to revisit this question later.

You must have something to add if you went. Send us your feedback on Twitter @AListDaily.

The Earned Media Value Of Top Companies For Q1 2017

Editor’s note: Robin Boytos is the director of analytics for Ayzenberg Insights. AListDaily is the editorial and publishing arm of the Ayzenberg Group, the parent company of Ayzenberg Insights.

Which companies are killing it on social media? We’re taking a look at how companies are engaging their audiences with social media content and what kind of ROI they’re getting every quarter at Ayzenberg Insights.

We compiled a list of companies using industry rankings of the world’s most valuable brands and measured the performance of their company’s social media pages with Ayzenberg’s Earned Media Value Index. The earned media revenue was calculated using public social media engagement data, excluding the top five percent of posts on Twitter, 12 percent on YouTube and 20 percent on Facebook on the assumption that these posts utilized paid media.

What is EMV?

Earned media is the extended value of paid, organic social or influencer activity. EMV provides the value of virality on social content—engagements are valuable.

Rates are assigned to a like, comment, share, click and various other metrics through extensive research of the value of each of these metrics with an emphasis on how much this would cost to buy through programmatic buying on social networks. Earned media can be looked at from this perspective: if we stopped all organic social activity, how much paid media is needed to achieve the same earned media results?

Breaking Down The Top 10 Brands By EMV

Disney “The kids brand.” Disney is one of the best to leverage UGC on Instagram, which that along with a large variety of content and high quality assets drove up their Instagram earned media revenue—pushing them into the top 10. Disney also capitalizes on where their Gen Z viewers consume content through YouTube.

H&M and Forever 21 “The cool brands.” For fast fashion companies H&M and Forever 21, Instagram plays to their sweet spot by highlighting trends, usage of models, celebrities and the popular social media trend: knolling.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BT0spKHAppC/

Red Bull “The action brand.” Instagram drove up Red Bull’s earned media revenue with rarely any Red Bull branding at all. This brand is all about appealing to extreme sports and adrenaline-pumping activities.

Starbucks “The tasty brand.” Starbucks lets their product speak for itself with solo focus on their tasty food and drinks. Instagram taps into the millennial and Gen Z infatuation with food pictures and complements the product with cheerful, vibrant colors.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTmCQlOjkG5/

Nike “The athletic brand.” Nike promotes aspirational and athletic content that embraces the lifestyle of “just do it”.  Nike is able to translate their branding into clearly themed pictures on Instagram.

Audi “The sleek brand.” Instagram is the driving force of Audi’s EMV by incorporating high-resolution shots of their cars from all angles and backdrops. Audi beautifully ties together art and adventure.

Ford “The practical brand.” Ford’s largest source of earned media value comes from YouTube, where practical information drives viewership such as competitor comparisons and customer testimonials. Ford also sees a nice lift from Instagram where they encourage their customers to “go further,” by highlighting the more rugged and durable aspects of their vehicles.

Arby’s “The clever brand.” Arby’s has seemingly mastered the art of marketing on Facebook, driving up their EMV.  Arby’s cleverly places their food as a secondary focus and integrates highly innovative concepts, which in turn receives high shares and likes. More on their strategy here.

Coke “The feel-good brand.” Coca-Cola encapsulates how the cold, refreshing taste of Coke improves everyday moments in life through humorous, “feel good” videos.

Takeaways

If YouTube and Instagram are done right, the earned media revenue payout can be great. With strong Instagram and YouTube strategies, these platforms launched brands into the top 10. Other general trends observed included an abundance of creative assets in the form of photo, GIFs and video. Finally, each of our top 10 had a distinguishable theme and/or brand voice.

#NuggsForCarter Means Over $7 Million Earned Media Value For Wendy’s

Wendy’s has earned a reputation for being sassy on social media, but one witty response in April brought far more fame than ever expected. It all started when a 16-year-old named Carter Wilkerson asked the restaurant how many retweets it would take to earn him a year’s supply of free chicken nuggets. When Wendy’s gave him a seemingly impossible number (18 million), the hungry nugget-lover wasn’t deterred—and #NuggsForCarter was born.

The request soon went viral, catching the attention and support from brands like Amazon and Microsoft, as well as celebrities like Aaron Paul and NASCAR’s Leavine Family Racing. It became apparent, as the retweets kept piling in, that Carter might very well beat Ellen DeGeneres’ record for the most re-tweets ever—previously earned for her selfie at the 2014 Academy Awards. In defense of her title, DeGeneres even had Bradley Cooper come on her show for a comedic appeal to fans for additional retweets.

In the end, Carter didn’t break 18 million retweets, but he did end up breaking all Twitter records. And yes, he got his nuggs.

So, just how much did Wendy’s benefit from this viral nugget quest on Twitter? A whole lot of earned media.

“Earned media” is the value of engagements a brand receives across channels as a result of their marketing efforts. To help quantify what the value of those engagements are worth, the Ayzenberg Group established the Ayzenberg Earned Media Value Index (AEMVI) and assigned a quantifiable dollar amount for marketing gains a brand receives from a campaign or individual engagement that includes social media networks and similar digital properties. (Editor’s note: AListDaily is the media arm of the Ayzenberg Group.)

Based on the current EMV for Twitter engagements, analysts calculate that . . .

Wendy’s earned:

  • $6,720,000 in EMV: 3.5 million retweets on Carter’s Original tweet
  • $449,937.25 in EMV: 257,107 tweets about #NuggsForCarter

Had Carter met his goal of 18 million retweets, that would equal $34,560,000 in earned media value for Wendy’s.

Wendy’s cost:

  • $1,960.05: A $1.79 six-piece pack of nuggets three times a day, if Carter eats them for every meal, every day.
  • $100,000: Donation to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA)

Way to go, Carter! Enjoy your nuggs, you’ve definitely earned them.

Analysis: Let’s Break Down The Top Twitter Trends For April

Editor’s note: Robin Boytos is the director of analytics for Ayzenberg Insights. AListDaily is the editorial and publishing arm of the Ayzenberg Group, the parent company of Ayzenberg Insights.

At Ayzenberg Insights, we’re often tasked with understanding the conversations happening on social media.

Here’s our take on the trends for this month—stay tuned to see how these trends evolve.

Top 25 US Twitter Trends For April 2017

Unsurprisingly, days of the week were top trending topics. Because they reoccur weekly, they racked up the most hours trending and most tweeted topics for April.

Outside of days of the week—in the US, we’re highly influenced by television shows. Whenever there are big televised events, finales, or reunions of our beloved shows, hashtags go viral. Titles that fell into this category: FeudFX, Scandal, SDLive, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and GirlsHBO.

Other TV shows trended in the US without any major event sparking their virality: Dancing with the Stars, Real Housewives of Atlanta and Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. These shows were able to capture consumer mindshare by leveraging celebrities involved in each of the shows and their real-life drama. We’re passionate about our characters and drama in the US, thus causing debates to get heated online and hashtags to go viral.

US Hashtag Spotlight

The hashtag of most interest to marketers in the US this month was #NationalSiblingsDay. Many brands were able to hop on this trend and experience exponential lift to their engagement metrics. Silly, heartwarming and encouraging, this trend allowed brands like Xbox to receive nearly 1,500 retweets by tying the trend to gamer culture, and Vampire Diaries to capture a relevant moment in their show driving more than 3,000 retweets. Even smaller organizations like the Special Olympics tweeted a heartfelt message that received over 200 retweets, which is well over the channel’s usual engagement.

Top 25 Global Twitter Trends For April 2017

Days of the week also trend on Twitter worldwide in different languages. Futbol is also a consistent favorite outside the US, trending globally on multiple occasions. Cruz Azul, Arsenal, #اوامر_ملكيه, Isco, # صباحات_الهلال, and Felipe Melo fall into this category.

Global Hashtag Spotlight

Hashtag spotlights for global marketers this month include #NationalPetDay, #DiaInternacionalDelBeso, and #bucciovertimechallenge.

#NationalPetDay had an overwhelming amount of self-expression and love, with many accounts posting photos of themselves alongside their furry companions. Several brands jumped on this trend on social media to exponential success. This topic tended to be popular for gaming brands such as Fallout, Smite,  World of Warcraft and Watch Dogs 2, who used the hashtag to showcase relevant in-game content or fun pieces to tie to gamer culture.

Brands in other verticals such as Blue Cross Blue Shield Association were able to use this hashtag as an opportunity to share health tips and facts related to animals. Even @Twitter capitalized on their own trend with a piece of content themselves that received a significant lift in engagement.

#DiaInternacionalDelBeso, or International Kissing Day, trended in April and all of Latin America took to Twitter to make tongue-in-cheek jokes, political commentary and share pictures of kisses between loved ones. CloseUp Argentina, a toothpaste company, found a clever way to get in on the action and received a nice lift over their usual engagement.

Last but not least, an interesting case study for unexpected viral trends—ESPN anchor John Buccigross capitalized on a longstanding hockey tradition of picking the winning goal-scorer if a playoff game goes to overtime. His Twitter overtime challenge offering simple prizes went viral and made it into our top 25 trending worldwide hashtag lists.

Digital Content Newfronts Shows That The State Of Social Video Is Still Going Strong

IAB’s Digital Content Newfronts is still going strong, and one thing is for sure—social video is on just about everyone’s mind.

In its annual study, IAB found that marketers allocate 31 percent of digital and mobile video ad budgets to social media, so it should come as no surprise that it’s a hot topic among presentations this year. From original content on YouTube Red to live shows across Facebook and Twitter to partnerships with social media stars, brands are doubling down on content for this engaged market.

The New “Face” Of Digital Entertainment

Live broadcasts now make up 20 percent of video on Facebook, according to a post by Fidji Simo, Facebook’s vice president of product. Simo went on to say that the number of broadcasts has grown more than four times over the last year, and that will continue with original branded programming.

Today show contributor and serial entrepreneur Mario Armstrong has successfully launched a full-scale talk show with a live studio audience that is connected with an interactive audience online. The Never Settle Show is a program for and about entrepreneurs, airing each week from eight different platforms including Facebook Live, Periscope and YouTube Live—allowing audiences to comment and ask questions in real-time.

Disney’s beloved Mickey Mouse Club is returning for its fourth iteration since 1955, but this time, exclusively on Facebook. The variety show Club Mickey Mouse! will honor the spirit of the original series while bringing the show into the present day. The last iteration of the show—simply called MMC—helped usher in such talent as Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. Additional details, such as cast and whether or not the show will be broadcast live, have yet to revealed.

Live On Twitter

Twitter is known for up-to-the-minute updates ranging from what your friend made for dinner to play-by-play breakdowns of Fyre Festival. Livestreams around news, entertainment and sports are finding a home on the platform. Total hours of live content grew from 500 in Q4 to more than 800 in the first three months of 2017, according to Twitter.

During Newfronts, Twitter announced they will livestream with 16 new content partnerships, including deals with NFL, MLB, PGA, WNBA, The Player’s Tribune, Bloomberg Media, BuzzFeed News, The Verge, Live Nation and IMG Fashion, just to name a few. The social media site hasn’t forgotten video games, either. Twitter will livestream 15 esports tournaments and have 1,500 hours of online gaming.

Michelle Ebanks, president of Essence, announced a live video partnership with Twitter to broadcast Essence Now, the first live show on Twitter targeting black women.

Bloomberg previously announced a 24-hour news channel on Twitter following a successful broadcast of the 2016 US Presidential debates. The company surveyed a segment of its audience to see if they’d actually watch its shows on Twitter, and 73 percent of respondents said they would regularly do so.

“Ghostly” Presence

Although not a presenter, Snapchat’s presence was definitely felt at NewFronts with Hearst, Vice, Condé Nast, Time Inc. and many others showing plans to create for the platform. The sassy app and camera company is—and will continue to—offer original programming to its young audience.

Cosmopolitan is launching a new 10-episode Snapchat series with actress Yara Shahidi (Blackish) called Keep Calm & Yara On.

YouTube Sees Red (And Revenue)

YouTube didn’t skimp on its Newfronts presentation, complete with an after-dinner concert by Katy Perry. Susan Wojcicki, the company’s CEO, was quick to address the elephant in the room—security.

“The last several weeks have been challenging for some of you, and you’ve told us to do better when it comes to ad placement,” she told the audience. “I want you to know that we have taken your feedback to heart. We work hard every day to earn our advertisers’ and agencies’ trust, and we apologize for letting some of you down. I’m here to say that we can and we will do better.”

Concerns about ad placement haven’t stopped brands from producing content for the digital video giant, whether it be through YouTube Red or influencer partnerships. In its first Newfronts presentation, Entepreneur announced that its media arm, Entrepeneur Network will deploy a total of 37 series this year. Together with its partnerships with hundreds of top business-leaning YouTube channels, Entepreneur claims to drive 50 million minutes of viewership every month.

Awesomeness will renew its YouTube Red show Foursome and announced that its DreamWorksTV channel has 1.7 billion lifetime views and nearly three million subscribers, making it the No. 1 kids entertainment brand on YouTube.

Awesomeness recently conducted a study of Gen Z and found that 55 percent of the generation prefers to connect through social networks, and 71 percent stream their favorite shows.

Why Zynga Challenged Snapchat Users To Put On Their Poker Faces

Zynga helped redefine what “April showers” meant by making it rain virtual dollar bills. In an innovative use of Snapchat’s lens feature, users could play a quick hand of Zynga Poker by utilizing their facial expressions. In the activation, Snapchat first dealt the flop, and then users could raise their eyebrows to fill out the board by dealing the turn, river, and player’s hole cards. Winning the hand made virtual money rain down on the screen.

Edward Le Breton, vice president of Zynga Poker, sat down with AListDaily to talk about how this interactive Snapchat lens brought out everyone’s best poker face.

“We’re huge fans of Snapchat and were inspired by the way other brands were using lenses to engage Snapchat users in unique ways,” said Le Breton, describing how the how the idea for the lens came about.

“Zynga has a long history of innovation in social—our mission is to connect the world through games—so we were excited by the potential of working with the Snapchat team to deliver users a cool, new social experience. Product wise, Zynga Poker seemed like a natural fit for Snapchat. So much about poker is about the player’s ‘tell,’ so we wanted to have some fun with an interactive lens that let users play a quick hand, change their face in reaction to the cards they’re dealt and, hopefully, make it rain with winnings. It’s a bite-sized Zynga Poker experience.”

Le Breton also explained why Snapchat was the ideal social platform to promote the game. “Zynga Poker, which turns 10 years old this year, is the world’s largest free-to-play social poker game, and Snapchat is one of the fastest growing mobile platforms around,” he said. “We were excited to combine the two and introduce Zynga Poker to a new audience that may not be as familiar with the game. Poker can be an intimidating game for some, so a Snapchat lens was the perfect, lighthearted way for us to introduce people to Zynga Poker.”

Snapchat users really took to playing poker. “The reaction was fantastic,” said Le Breton. “The lens reached 23 million unique Snapchat users and, based on the number of times it was used, an estimated 6.3 years of Zynga Poker was played via the lens. We even saw a couple professional poker players use the lens.”

But as to whether or not the activation led to increased downloads of Zynga Poker, Le Breton said that, “Our focus was on user engagement with the lens, and continuing our effort to reach players on new, emerging platforms. Overall, we’re pleased with how the Zynga Poker lens performed. This was the first time Zynga—and I believe any other gaming company, for that matter—has created a completely interactive, gamified Snapchat lens.”

So, does this mean we can expect more interactive game lenses to come from Zynga in the future? “We’re not sharing plans for any other upcoming Snapchat lenses at this point,” Le Breton explained. “That said, we learned a lot from the Zynga Poker lens—most importantly, that the lens has to feel authentic to the brand and tied to the gameplay as much as possible. We achieved that with the Zynga Poker lens. It was a great, mini extension of the game, and would apply that same thinking to any future Zynga game lenses.”

NASA is inspiring star gazers on Tumblr by comparing real-life exoplanets with those found in the Star Wars universe.

“From Luke Skywalker’s home world Tatooine, you can stand in the orange glow of a double sunset,” NASA writes. “The same could said for Kepler-16b, a cold gas giant roughly the size of Saturn, that orbits two stars. Kepler-16b was the Kepler telescopes’s first discovery of a planet in a ‘circumbinary’ orbit (that is, circling both stars, as opposed to just one, in a double star system).”

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a Deathstar—Nerdist is celebrating with a GIF party, inviting fans to share their favorite creations over social media channels.

Forbes gave sage advice to fans about climbing the corporate ladder, explored the science of blowing up the Death Star and revealed how much George Lucas is worth.

Cisco used the celebration to show how happy its employees are, and to encourage future applicants to join them in their adventures.

Acura Doubles Down On Vertical Video

Acura is shifting its gears in creating multi-platform marketing collateral by rolling out a new mobile-first campaign created entirely by using vertical video.

The star of the vibrant “What A Ride” campaign, shot entirely with vertical cameras and edited with lightning-fast precision, is the car manufacturer’s TLX performance luxury sedan. Acura’s creative approach to mobile comes as a result of catering to evolving consumer consumption habits toward content on digital platforms.

The psychedelic videos, shot under the serenades of hip-hop artist Kid Ink’s song “The Movement,” translates across horizontal formats like television by relying on triptych story arcs by simply dividing the screen into three. Acura hopes that their entirely new sporty and aggressive messaging method establishes a voice that resonates with consumers and differentiates their brand—especially by broadening the appeal of the TLX to younger buyers.

Filming in the visually dynamic format with social media creative techniques offers immersive opportunities such as Tapad’s mobile vertical video, Facebook canvas and carousel ad units, and Snapchat’s Snap Ads web view ad opportunity where users can actually learn more about and engage with the TLX.

Ed Beadle, Acura’s senior manager of integrated marketing, joined AListDaily to detail how their refreshed approach is designed to improve drive consideration.

Why did you decide to go with a nimbler and modular approach with your creative assets?

Modular video is a consumer-first insight. Providing content that fits the space as well as the interests of the consumer is critical for a positive interaction. For the 2018 TLX, Acura is launching an innovative mobile-first campaign utilizing vertical video along with provocative word pairings to illustrate the vehicle’s—and the brand’s—multifaceted and dynamic nature. Rather than capture content meant to work on a horizontal medium like TV and then struggle to crop and adjust for vertical environments, the entire campaign is shot with vertical cameras to create content and creative assets that aren’t compromised when translated to mobile. Essentially, the Acura brand took social content development techniques, and applied them to the entire campaign.

What insights and data led you to this new mobile-first, vertical video approach with “What A Ride?”

More and more people are consuming content via a hand-held device, and we realized that in order to break through, we needed to show up where our consumers are today. In taking a mobile-first approach, we’re prioritizing mobile as a medium, thinking about the way our images and content translates here first, rather than making a secondary consideration.

How is your marketing budget shifting to constantly tweak brand strategy based on consumer habits?

A___SPEC

In recent years, Acura has made more of a conscious effort to shift budget toward cross-platform digital opportunities that allow for campaigns to naturally optimize based on the media consumption habits of key consumers and prospects. Additionally, Acura will continue to take an assertive approach to maximize digital investment in mobile to reach consumers throughout their day and develop “always on strategies” in key areas such as video and social CRM targeting to keep the Acura brand continuously top of mind.

Are there any new marketing platforms you plan on testing?

Acura continues to experiment with new technologies and ad platforms that allow for both key audiences to engage with the brand in new and exciting ways, and enable Acura to precisely target new audiences.

How is Acura positioning itself as a challenger brand?

Acura was born a challenger brand, rooted in performance, with precision crafted performance as the brand’s key promise to customers. About 18 months ago, we made a decision to focus on precision crafted performance as our new brand direction and promise, as Acura is a brand built on youthful energy and authentic, original values, challenging the status quo—with performance and precision craftsmanship infused into all aspects of our products. Precision crafted performance is an obsession with finding a better way, an original approach to technology and design that creates a new driving experience, and this philosophy has been applied to Acura marketing—in the youthful, independent spirit of the ads, which speaks to how the Acura brand is always challenging convention.

Why is Acura still waiting for NSX’s halo effect? How can you do a better job of marketing your super car?

NSX as a brand halo is making an impact and continues to extend the Acura performance message image to our products, and it elevates our performance message with customers. You may have seen NSX in our “Point of View” spot, the 2016 Super Bowl spot, the “MDX Wow” campaign, and you’ll see NSX in our newest campaign, for the 2018 TLX. By leveraging the NSX supercar within Acura communications, brand indicators have strengthened. We also notice that Acura advertising scores higher when NSX is shown, even if shown briefly. NSX is also helping drive attention and engagement for the brand among the luxury market. There has been increased consideration actions among those who visit the NSX page on our site. Connection for consumers with the NSX also helps increase Acura’s social value as a whole, and has increased messaging scores for Acura models.

What is your overall digital strategy in marketing to millennials for them to understand who you are as a brand?

Our strategy is to provide the right message through the right channel at the right time. We use audience targeting and tailor our creative specifically to work on the various mobile and social channels where millennials live their lives. This lets Acura be a more organic part of their experience online—rather than bombarding them with traditional ad tactics.
